Funeral services were held Saturday, January 18 at 10 a.m. for Oran John Brandt at the Haylock-O'Hara Funeral Home in Maquoketa. Burial was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia, with the Rev. Curtis Webster officiating. Mr. Brandt died Wednesday, January 15 in the hospital at Maquoketa, following a stroke.
Born December 1, 1910 in Postville, he was the son of John S. and Emma (Schroeder) Brandt. He attended school in Castalia and Postville, graduating from Postville high school in 1929.
On November 27, 1935, he was married to Virgie M. Olson of Leon, Iowa.
He lived in Castalia 13 years, employed by Carnation. He lived in Yuma, Arizona one year doing construction work, lived in Delhi five years and in Maquoketa for 20 years employed by the State Department of Agriculture. He had recently retired.
He was a member of Brotherly Love Masonic Lodge of Postville and a member of the Methodist church. He was a well known pop artist in painting and model making.
Survivors include his wife, a son John E. Brandt of Cedar Falls and a daughter Mrs. Robert (Jean Ann) Haylock of Parkersburg; a brother Walter Brandt of Castalia and 6 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Mrs. Hattie Bachelder and Mrs. Irene Ostlie.
