Ruth S. Ellingson, age 86, of Decorah, Iowa, died Wednesday, September 20, 2006 of injuries received in a car accident on Highway 9 in Decorah.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 25, 2006 at First Lutheran Church by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah, with Full Military Honors accorded by Helof Holm V.F.W. Post No. 1977, Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Post No. 163, D.A.V. Hamre-Giesen Chapter No. 8 and AMVETS Post No. 96.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Sunday, September 24, 2006 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, where there will be a V.F.W. Memorial Service held at 6:30 P.M. Sunday. Friends may also call after 10 A.M. Monday at the church.

Ruth Selena (Larson) Ellingson was born December 8, 1919, in rural Allamakee County, Iowa, the daughter of John E. and Minnie J. (Iverson) Larson.

She graduated from Waukon High School with the Class of 1936. After High School, Ruth worked in the Winneshiek County Courthouse. She then enlisted in the first class of the U.S. Navy Waves in October 1942. During her three years of naval service she was commissioned as an Ensign, and worked for the Navy Department in Washington D.C.

Following her tour of duty, Ruth was united in marriage to Nathan C. “Hoot” Ellingson on February 11, 1946 in Minneapolis, MN. To this union, two children were born: Charles and Gregory.

During her life, Ruth worked for Luther College and the Federal Land Bank in Decorah. She was an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, where she served as a Deaconess and participated in Do-Day. Ruth joined the VFW Auxiliary in Decorah on April 8, 1946 and was a member for over 60 years and she was a 56 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Nordic Players.

Ruth was a gifted musician and she loved sharing her gift of piano playing to many community venues in the Decorah area and also played the organ at many V.F.W. Memorial Services. She was an accomplished quilter and enjoyed helping make quilts at church for overseas missions.

Survivors include her two sons, Charles R. Ellingson, HMC, USN (ret.) of Lansing, Michigan and Gregory J. Ellingson and his wife, J Ann (Everson) of Mountain Home, Arkansas; four sisters-in-law, Ethel Ellingson of Decorah, IA, Edna Mae Korn of Long Beach, CA, Elizabeth Ellingson of Hemet, CA and Leila Ellingson of Federal Way, WA and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Nathan C. “Hoot” Ellingson on August 9, 1985.
