Kathy Dehning, age 64, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Marion Pruitt - Jefferson presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, in Decorah, Iowa, and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Wednesday morning.

Memorials may be given in memory of Kathy to the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospice/In Home Healthcare, 907 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA, or to the Decorah Athletic & Music Booster Club, P.O. Box 293, Decorah, IA 52101, or to the Decorah Scholarship Foundation Fund for Early Childhood Education, 510 Winnebago Street, Decorah, IA 52101.

Kathryn “Kathy” Rose (Sylvanus) Dehning was born on January 24, 1946, to Fern Sylvanus in Iowa City, Iowa. Kathy attended Decorah Schools and graduated from Decorah High School in 1964. She married Ron Dehning on May 8, 1965, at the Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah. They moved to Cedar Rapids and she worked for Square D, later moving to Mount Vernon and Lisbon, returning to Decorah in 1976. She then worked at the Burger V, K & S Grocery Store, Hardees and did daycare in her home for many years. Most recently she worked at Kwik Star and for the Decorah Community School System at the High School, Middle School and at the Carrie Lee Elementary school, retiring in 2009. Kathy was an avid supporter of all Decorah athletics and activities. She enjoyed bird and eagle watching, her Schnauzer dogs, walking, gardening, her flowers, and especially Mabe’s Pizza. She was a big Hawkeye, Green Bay Packer, Chicago Cub and UNI Panther fan. Kathy also enjoyed classic and country music, but above all, she loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Kathy was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church.

Kathy is survived by her husband: Ron Dehning, Decorah, IA. One daughter: Teresa (special friend, Bryon Ruroden) Dehning, Decorah, IA. One son: Don (Pam) Dehning, Decorah, IA. Five grandchildren: Crystal (Tim) Wiedow; Kailynda White, Shaun Dehning, Katelyn Dehning and Jordyn White. Two great grandchildren: Rorie Rose and Camielle Izabelle Wiedow. Three sisters: Edna (LaMoyne) Thompson, Decorah, IA; Barbara (Doug) Cromwell, Queen City, TX; and Sharon (Gerald) Schmidt, Cedar Rapids, IA. One brother: Roger (Ruth) McCreight, Tempe, AZ. Her mother-in-law: Marjorie Dehning, Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Duane (Nancy) Dehning, Decorah, IA. One sister-in-law: Karen Dehning, Marengo, IA, along with many nieces and nephews and her Schnauzer, Wilbur.

Kathy was preceded in death by her mother: Fern Sylvanus on Oct. 25, 1985. Her mother-in-law: Eleanor Dehning on Feb. 8, 1984. Her father-in-law: Harold Dehning on Dec. 19, 1999. Two brothers: Bill Sylvanus on February 28, 2006 and Edward McCreight on April 30, 2007. One brother-in-law: Harlan Dehning on May 19, 2008. Her aunt: Francis Folgelson on September 30, 2009, and her three beloved Schnauzer dogs: Smokey Joe, Ellie Mae and Elsa Misty Suzanne.
