Joan Buhr, age 72, of rural Cresco, Iowa, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 1, 2007, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa, following a long fight against cancer.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, with Rev. James Glesne, Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Allen Vik officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Eldorado, Iowa.

Friends called from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 5, 2007 at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, in Decorah, Iowa and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Tuesday morning. The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa was in charge of arrangements.

Jolynn Pecinovsky, a special and close friend gave a beautiful eulogy The organist was Kathy Murrary. Don DiLaura was the soloist and sang “The Lord’s Prayer” and “Amazing Grace”. The congregational hymns were “Let There Be Peace on Earth” “Your Little Ones, Dear Lord” and “How Great Thou Art”. Nicole Ramstad McCasland played the Ashokan Farewell on the violin.

Casketbearers were her grandsons: Todd Rima, Jason Rima, Ryan McKernan, Justin Smith, Andrew Smith, Ricky Smith, Taylor Henkes and Dakota Smith.

Honorary Casketbearers are Joan’s granddaughters: Heather Buisman, Rochelle Herbert, Karissa Thacker, Tiffany Smith, Jennifer Woods, Jenna Henkes, Rebecca Wilson, Amy Henkes, Jodi Richardson, Sarah Richardson and Kayla Smith.

Special Casketbearers are step-grandchildren: Richard March, Benjamin Margrave, Anthony Margrave, Clarissa Crider, Jamie Henkes-Schott, Chris Henkes, Amy Evans and Aaron Kulish.

Joan Lillian (Skaim) Smith Buhr was born on April 28, 1934, the daughter of Joseph and Viola (Borseth) Skaim in Decorah, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in her Lutheran faith at the Decorah Lutheran Church. She attended Decorah High School and still enjoyed getting together with classmates for luncheons and to talk over good times. She was married to Dennis Dale Smith in Washington, Iowa. She returned to Decorah where she raised nine children. In 1970, she married Don Buhr. Joan was a housewife and also worked at JC Penney’s for over thirty years. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and gardening of which Don and she took to the Farmer’s Market. She took up woodworking after her retirement. She enjoyed doing whatever she could for her family and friends. She truly was a person that loved to give more than receive.

Joan’s survivors include her husband, Donald Buhr, Cresco, IA. Four daughters: Deb (John) Rima, Decorah, IA; Jane (Stan) McKernan, Waterloo, IA; Jeanette (Jim) Henkes, Wyoming, IA and Donna (Tim) Fontana, Cedar Rapids, IA. Five sons: Steve Smith, Humbolt, IA; Dan (Patti) Smith, Cresco, IA; Richard Smith, Gallatin, MO; Terry (Bridget) Smith, Calmar, IA and Russ (Bobbi) Smith, Sugar Creek, MO. Two sisters: Shirley Gray, Mauston, WI and Linda (Paul) Rauter, Osseo, WI. Nineteen grandchildren include: Todd (Kelly) Rima, Jason (Molly) Rima, Ryan (Kari) McKernan, Justin Smith, Andrew (Trisha) Smith, Ricky Smith, Taylor Henkes, Dakota Smith, Heather (Kevin) Buisman, Rochelle (T.L.) Herbert, Karissa (Brian) Thacker, Tiffany Smith, Jennifer Woods, Jenna Henkes, Rebecca Wilson, Amy Henkes, Jodi Richardson, Sarah Richardson and Kayla Smith. Eight step-grandchildren: Richard (Lisa) March, Benjamin Margrave, Anthony Margrave, Clarissa Crider, Jamie Henkes-Schott, Chris Henkes, Amy Evans and Aaron Kulish. Thirteen great-grandchildren: Kelsey Rima, Alyssa Brinkman, McKenna Buisman, Dylan Johnson, Keeaunna Wilson, Makiah Pierce, Kyleigh Smith, Kairo Smith, Jordan Smith, Austin Anderson, Dylan Woods, Trevor Woods, Thomas Herbert and Noah Kryger. Five step great-grandchildren of Joan: Ryan Sniezek, Caleb Henkes-Schott, Tori Henkes-Schott, Keli March and Christopher March, and many nieces and nephews.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph and Viola Skaim. One brother: Leonard Skaim. One sister: Nina Ramstad and one grandson: Anthony Smith.

A special thank you to Dr. Alcee Jumonville, The Cancer Center and the Hospital at Gundersen Lutheran, The Winneshiek Medical Center, The Regional Medical Clinic in Cresco, Home Health Care, and Hospice for the wonderful care they have given Joan throughout her courageous battle with cancer.
