Bernice Buchheit, age 91, of Festina, Iowa, died on Saturday, September 6, 2008, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa, following a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, in Festina, Iowa, with Monsignor Cletus Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday and until 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Parish Center in Festina, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture wake service at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at the Parish Center.

Johanna Josephina Bernice (Huinker) Buchheit was born on March 19, 1917, the daughter of Frank and Caroline (Einck) Huinker in Waucoma, Iowa. Bernice attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina and helped area families when babies were born. Bernice married Lawrence Buchheit on June 12, 1939 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Festina. Together they lived and farmed west of Festina, until they moved into Festina in 1968. Bernice was a busy farmwife, who kept busy cooking and baking for her family. She loved her garden and flower gardens and visits from her family and friends. She also was a die-hard Cubs and Hawkeye fan, but enjoyed all kinds of sports. Bernice was a member of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Rosary Society.

Bernice’s survivors include her two daughters: Dianne (Phil) French, Calmar, IA and Anna Mae (Don) Bergan-Davis, Ridgeway, IA. Two sons: Ronald Buchheit and Kevin (Nancy) Buchheit, all of Fort Atkinson, IA. Fifteen grandchildren: Patty (Lloyd) Phillips, Annette (Doyle) Speer, Cheryl (Scott) Hotvedt, Stephanie French, Philip C. (Dawn) French, David (Elaine) Bergan, Christine (Cary) Nason, Michelle (Daryl) Humpal, Renae (Jeff) Beneke, Michael (Monica) Bergan, Melinda (Troy) Murphy, Abby Buchheit, Lindsey Buchheit, Joseph Buchheit and Jordan Buchheit. Twenty-three great grandchildren. Two sisters: Ethel Luzum, Calmar, IA and Geneva (Clarence) Kuennen, St. Lucas, IA. One brother: Donald (Catherine) Huinker, Ossian, IA. Three sisters-in-law: Winifred Einck, Decorah, IA; Arlene Huinker, Calmar, IA and Bernice Huinker, Ft. Atkinson, IA, along with several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents: Frank and Caroline Huinker. Her husband: Lawrence on Sept. 20, 2004. One son-in-law: Eldon Bergan in 1994. One daughter-in-law: Bernice Buchheit in 2007. Four brothers: Cornelius, Robert, Gerald and Virgil Huinker. One sister: Margie Huber.
