Norman Brynsaas, age 90, died Sunday March 11, 2007 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah after a short illness.

Funeral Service will be on Wednesday March 14, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church rural Decorah by Rev. Douglas Mathison with burial at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be on Tuesday March 13, 2007 at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home in Decorah from 4:00 – 7:00. Visitation after 10:00 at the church on Wednesday.

Norman Alexander Brynsaas was born on October 2, 1916 in Glenwood Township east of Decorah, Iowa, son of Hans and Karen (Erickson) Brynsaas where he spent all of his boyhood days and attended the county grade school. Each summer Norman attended three to four weeks of Norwegian Parochial School, which were provided by the Glenwood Lutheran church. Oscar P. Lovstuen was the teacher. He was confirmed in April of 1931 in the Glenwood Lutheran Church in the Norwegian language.

On August 18, 1937 he married Mae Rasmussen at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church. They had two children: Nancy and Robert. Norman farmed until 1953 when the family moved to Decorah. He worked for Calmar Manufacturing in Calmar, Iowa for eight years. In 1963 he began work as a caretaker of the Aase Haugen Nursing Home. Fifteen years later Norman decided to become self-employed as a carpenter and carpet layer. Norman also enjoyed fishing, genealogy, playing cards and his volunteer work at the Norwegian Museum in Decorah. He loved to travel and had visited Norway four times. He was proud of his affiliation with Hadeland Lag, an organization of descendents of immigrants from the Hadeland area of Oppland County Norway in the United States dedicated to preserving the historical traditions of Norway. Norman wrote various articles for The Brua, quarterly newsletter for the Hadeland Lag.

Survivors are: wife, Mae Brynsaas of Decorah; daughter, Nancy (Bill) Spilde of Decorah; son, Robert (Elaine) Brynsaas of Apache Junction AZ; his grandchildren: Luann Ward (Tom) of Calmar; Mark Spilde (Theresa); Steve Spilde (Julie); Dan Spilde (Wendy); Lisa Lundvedt (Dwayne) all of Decorah; Suzanne Kimber (Russ) of Owasso OK; Jeffrey Brynsaas (Becky) of Tempe AZ; Susan Boucher (Barry) of Mesa AZ; Rodney Ihde (Jodi) of Fennimore, WI. Twenty nine great grand-children and three great great grand-children.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents: Hans and Karen Brynsaas; three sisters: Nina Borseth, Pearl Rosendahl and Emma Brown; three brothers: Art, Henry and Edwin Brynsaas.
