Gary Barth, age 66, of Decorah, IA, died Wednesday, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA, after a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 30, 2010, at the Decorah Lutheran Church with Rev. Wayne Hagen and Rev. Bryan Robertson presiding. Burial will be in the Springwater Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Saturday morning. There will be an I.O.O. F. Service at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the Funeral Home.

Gary Dean Barth was born on October 15, 1944, the son of Grant and Vivian (Erickson) Barth on the family farm north of Decorah. At birth, Gary and Glen were so little, so the oven of the kitchen cook stove was used as an incubator. He was baptized the day of his birth and confirmed at the Decorah Lutheran Church in 1959. Gary graduated from Decorah High School in 1962 and served in the US Air Force for a short time. Gary worked as a cook in the Decorah area; working for Luther College Food Service, Ronnie’s Café, the I.O.O. F. Lodge and the VFW. Gary was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and the Chicago White Sox. He enjoyed the fellowship at “Your Place” everyday with his friends. Gary was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church and was an active helper with the Spirit Newsletter. He also was a member of the Winneshiek I.O. O. F. Lodge #58 in Decorah for many years.

Gary is survived by his sister: Norma (Dale) Lundy, Decorah, IA. Four brothers: Gary’s twin brother: Glen Barth, Decorah, IA; Daryl (Shelley) Barth, Jacksonville, FL; Duane Barth, Lansing, IA; and Terry Barth, Decorah, IA. Five nieces: Suzanne (Lyle) Taylor, Spring Valley, MN; Krisanne (Craig) Nelson, Rochester, MN; Andrea Goehner, Chicago, IL; Sara (Brad) Anderson, Sun Prairie, WI; Kari (Kurt) Muchow, Minneapolis, MN. Six great nieces and nephews: Michael, Nicholas, & Megan Taylor, Spring Valley, MN; Alexis Nelson of Rochester, MN; and Cameron & Ryan Anderson, Two: Aunts: Leona Roher and June Anderson, both of Decorah, IA.

Gary was preceded in death by his father: Grant Barth on January 19, 1999 and his mother: Vivian Barth on June 17, 2004. One brother: Otis Barth on December 25, 1961.
