Mary Barloon, age 90, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Friday, December 15, 2006, at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, Iowa, following a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 18, 2006, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa and until 10:00 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Mary Therese (Becvar) Barloon was born on March 16, 1916, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Peeper) Becvar in Calmar, IA. Mary attended St. Aloysius and St. Francis de Sales Catholic Schools, graduating in 1929. She then graduated from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, IA, in 1931, majoring in music. Mary then taught in Alta Vista and in the Calmar areas. She married Adolph Barloon on November 7, 1939 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Together they farmed the Barloon family farm near Fort Atkinson, where they raised their six children. They moved into Fort Atkinson in 1968 and Mary taught piano, organ, guitar and violin lessons. Mary loved music and served as the organist at St. John’s Catholic Church for many years, retiring in the 1998. She enjoyed playing cards, baking and cooking for all her family members and spending time with them. Mary served as a 4-H Leader and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church; the American Legion Auxiliary, where she served as president; Calmar and Fort Atkinson Senior Citizen’s groups. She also received the Governor’s Volunteer of the Year Award.

Mary’s survivors include her six children: Eleanore (Francis) Martin, New Hampton, IA, Mary Anne (Tom) Hoey, West Union, IA, Vincent Barloon, Belle Plaine, IA, John (Kathy) Barloon, Decorah, IA, Linus (Marguerite) Barloon, Decorah, IA and Joanne Olson, Fort Atkinson, IA. Twenty-six grandchildren: Theresa Martin, Laurie (Tom) Waterman, Ronald Martin, Carol (Dan) Messersmith, Shawn (Jim) Hulbert; Kevin (Janelle) Hoey, Tom (Sue) Hoey, Brian (Julie) Hoey, Ryan (Jamie) Hoey, Katie Hoey; Tammera (Derek) Hopp, Melissa Wolfe; Corey (Heather) Barloon, Angela (Marlon) Hall, Brenda Barloon, Brent Barloon, Megan Barloon, Cody Barloon; Linus (Rhonda) Barloon II, Lynette (Randy) Luzum, Lee Barloon, Loren Barloon, Lisa (Justin) Kingkade, Lucas Barloon; Paula (Alan) Bakken and Bernard Olson, Jr. Forty-two great grandchildren: Joshua, Jeremy, Tony, Samantha, Evan, Daniele, Becca, Michael; Sean, Erin, Briana, Riley, Tyler, Steffan, Alyssa, Kristin, Jordan, Mekenzie, Kelsey, Nolan, Brooklyn; Aaron, Amber, Avery, Emily, Hanah; Andre, Andrew, Grace; Michaela, Brittney, Courtney, Linus III, Elizabeth, Alexis, Ethan, Eryn; Kayla, Shaina, Matthew, Ariel and Mercedes. One great great grandson: Treyton. One brother: Raphael (Dorothy) Becvar, St. Louis, MO. One sister: Lois (Ray) Turner, Forrest City, IA. One sister-in-law: Agnes Skretta, Ft. Atkinson, IA and several nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adolph in 1995; one granddaughter: Karen Hoey in 1964; and one brother: Francis in 1965.
