Herbert G. Arp, age 87, of Decorah, Iowa, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 16, 2009 at Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 20, 2009 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev. Steven M. Jacobsen with inurnment in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah.

Visitation will be after 10:00 A.M. Monday, one hour before services, at First Lutheran Church. Fjelstul Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Herbert George Arp was born May 21, 1922, in Astoria (Long Island City), NY, the son of August and Erna (Benndorf) Arp. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in November 1942, serving at Throgs Neck Bronx, NY, escorting merchant ships into New York Harbor. He later was sent to Guantanamo Bay for ant-aircraft training and was enroute, aboard the Destroyer Escort U.S. Chambers, to serve in the Pacific area when peace was declared. He was discharged in March 1946

Herb met his wife, Dorothy Preiser, in 1945 and they were united in marriage on August 29, 1948 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Astoria, New York. This union was blessed with two children, David and Lauraine.

He worked in New York City as a bookkeeper for Jules Weber and H.B. Day Co., wholesale grocers, retiring in 1985. In 1986, Herb and Dorothy moved to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina and lived there for 18 years. They moved to Decorah, Iowa in 2004. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Erna Arp and Paula Walenta; and by one brother, Walter Arp.

Herb is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Decorah; his daughter, Laurie Arp of Decorah; his son, David (Candace) Arp of Decorah; two grandchildren: Alison (Steve) Elwood and Carrie (Jason) Duranceau, both of Decorah; and three great-grandchildren: Isabelle Elwood and Lucas and Eli Duranceau. Memorials may be given to Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice, 901 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA 52101 or First Lutheran Church, 604 West Broadway, Decorah, IA 52101.
