Helen Andera, age 89, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa, after a lengthy bout with Alzheimer’s.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 15, 2010, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman, presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday and on Monday morning until 10:00 a.m., at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
Helen Marie (Kacher) Andera was born on October 14, 1920, on the family farm near Jackson Junction, Iowa. She was the only child of James and Mary (Wagner) Kacher and she attended country school in rural Fort Atkinson, Iowa. On August 24, 1949, Helen was united in marriage to Edward Andera of Spillville. Together they farmed near Jackson Junction for many years. Helen moved to the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah in August 2000 until October 2004, and then to the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian. As a true homemaker, she enjoyed cooking, baking and ironing. Helen also enjoyed gardening along with her husband, and spent many hours canning and freezing their garden produce. For relaxation, she liked to sew, embroider and crochet. Helen was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the Parish Guild.
Helen is survived by her three children: Rosemary Andera, Fort Atkinson, IA; James Andera & wife Debbie, Gardner, KS; and Dorothy “Dorie” Gruetzmacher & husband Carmen, Jr., Letts, IA. One grandchild: Kathy Andera, Greeley, CO.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband: Edward on January 24, 1998. Her parents and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
