Hazel Sharp, age 90, of Decorah, Iowa, died Sunday, August 29, 2004 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah of complications from diabetes.

Funeral Service is on Friday, September 3, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. at the First United Methodist Church in Decorah by the Rev. Anita Bane. Burial will be in the Russell Cemetery in rural Decorah.

Visitation is on Thursday, September 2, 2004 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Fjelstul Funeral Home and on Friday after 10:00 am at the church.

Hazel Sharp was born March 5, 1914 on the family farm in Canoe Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of John Severin and Sarah (Nesheim) Quandahl.

She was baptized at Big Canoe Lutheran Church, rural Decorah and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She attended rural schools in Canoe Township and graduated from Decorah High School with the Class of 1931.

On December 8, 1931, she was united in marriage to Lloyd Hutton Sharp at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Decorah. They became the parents of eight children.

Hazel held several jobs, including cook at Cozy Tea Room in Decorah, clerk at Ted’s Tobacco Store in Decorah, and was employed for 26 years at Luther College working in the “Canteen”, Luther Book Store, and finally as head cashier at the Luther Student Union.

Hazel’s interests consisted of many outdoor activities, including tending her flower gardens, fishing, picnics, and photography. She also loved music of all kinds. She played the piano in her younger years and often chorded for fiddlers at local house parties. Above all, she simply enjoyed people and corresponding with distant relatives and friends, including many students she met during her Luther years.

Hazel has been a resident of Aase Haugen Home in Decorah since April 21, 2002. She died Sunday, August 29, 2004 at the Aase Haugen Home at the age of 90 years.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years, Lloyd on October 21, 1999; a daughter, Cheryl Rae; a son, Merle Hutton and an infant daughter; two brothers, Raymond (Marian) Quandahl and Walter (Evelyn) Quandahl; and a sister, Irene (Albert) Richards.

She is survived by three daughters, LaVonne of Chicago, IL.; Caryl of Spring Valley, MN; Phyllis (James) Cutsforth of Ottumwa, IA.; two sons, Merlin of Fort Atkinson, IA. and John (JoAnn) of Decorah, IA. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Brian James (Keitha) Cutsforth of Ottumwa, IA., Patrick John Cutsforth and Sean Michael Cutsforth, both of Iowa City, IA.; Heather Ann Sharp, Andrew Hutton Sharp, and Lauren Marie Sharp all of Decorah, IA.; and by three great-grandchildren, Emily Irene and Thomas Brian Cutsforth of Ottumwa, IA. and Kellie Ann Sharp of Decorah, IA.
