Calma was born February 17, 1913 in Hesper, Iowa to Anton and Kristine (Knutson) Brenna. She married Ole K. Sanden on May 25, 1935. He later died in 1980. They lived in Hesper and Calma worked at the Hesper School and at the Hesper Lutheran Church as a custodian. When the Hesper School closed, Calma went to work at the Decorah School. She was an active member of the Hesper Lutheran Church and enjoyed sewing, scrapbooking, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Calma passed away Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Caledonia Care and Rehab in Caledonia, Minnesota at the age of 95.

Calma is survived by her daughter Marlene (Myles) Esch of Caledonia; 5 grandchildren Tom (Ruth) Esch, Dick (Jane) Esch, Linda Esch (John Larson), and Tina (Paul) Fruechte all of Caledonia; and Matt (Amy Esch of Winona, Minn.; four great grandchildren; and a sister Ruby Erlandson of Spring Grove.She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, and a sister.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper, Iowa with the Rev. Matt Larson, officiating. Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. “The journey has been long…it’s time to go home now”
