Hazel Jean Francis Olson, age 67 of Decorah, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wisc. following a brief illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 14, 2005 at First United Methodist Church in Decorah by the Rev. Carol Kress, with burial in Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah.

Visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 13, 2005 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and an hour prior to the services on Monday at the church.

Hazel Jean Francis Olson was born March 9, 1937 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Helen (Youmans) Bryant. She was Baptized on April 3, 1937 and Confirmed on April 10, 1949 at the First United Methodist Church in Decorah. Hazel attended High School in Alexandria, Virginia and graduated with the Class of 1955. As a young woman, she attended Yaguchi No Watashi Business College in Japan.

Hazel married Milton Huffman in 1957. To this union, three children were born: Daniel, Linda and Faye. In 1963, Hazel married Clayton Olson. They shared life together until his death on November 3, 1980. For the last several years, Hazel shared her life with her partner and companion, Raymond Renn.

Through the years, Hazel had accepted many roles. The most important role was that of a stay-at-home Mom. Later in her life, Hazel found fulfillment in different occupations. For many years she worked at the Cliff House Restaurant in Decorah. Up until her death, she assembled factory parts in her home. Hazel dedicated much of her time to helping those who where less fortunate than her.

Hazel enjoyed exploring nature. During her adventures outdoors, she would take time to fish or hunt ginseng. With herbs she gathered from nature, Hazel took pleasure in cooking and baking. Hazel also enjoyed writing. She created a “How To” cookbook using natural products. She was concerned with environmental issues and was willing to share her knowledge with folks in her community. In the evenings, Hazel could be found knitting, crocheting or creating other craft products. Cats had a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Clayton Olson; her grandmother, Vila Youmans, and several Aunts and Uncles.

Survivors include her companion, Raymond Renn of Decorah; three children, Daniel (Arlene) Olson of New Hope, Minn., Linda Poltiske (and companion Larry) of Blaine, Minn., Faye (Steve) Hageman of Burr Oak, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Christopher Olson of New Hope, Minn., Amanda and Sara Huffman of Brooklyn Park, Minn., William Kocian, Jr. of Cedar Falls, Iowa, David Kocian of Decorah, Iowa, Anthony and Nicole Kocian of Burr Oak, Iowa; one sister, Ginger (Lloyd) Zoubek of Golden Valley, Minn.; her step-mother, Yoshiko (Glen) Belange of Richfield, Minn.; two aunts, Ardith (Dr. Robert) Holland of Downers Grove, Ill., and Hazel Youmans of Houston, Tex., one uncle, Wesley Youmans, and several nieces and nephews.
