Rites For Mrs. Birdsell
Funeral services were conducted at the Community Church in Frankville for Mrs. Rachel Birdsell last Thursday afternoon, the Rev. Frank Callender of Decorah officiating, at the church and the graveside in Centennial Cemetery.
Mrs. Roland of Decorah sang, "I Need Thee" and "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Mrs. Leslie Latterman at the piano. Six great grandchildren carried the flowers, Mrs. George Simpson of Terrill, Mary Birdsell of Monona, Jettie Mae and Linda Lenth of Decorah and Elaine and Kathryn Ruen.
Rachel Birdsell was born February 27, 1855. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Sarah Folsom of Ripley County, Indiana. She came with her parents to Winneshiek county at the age of ten years. Rachel was married to James Birdsell, lifelong Winneshiek county farmer, December 11, 1876. He preceded her in death on February 15, 1912. They became the parents of two sons and one daughter, Ray, now living in Decorah and Lottie, now Mrs. Walter Pilgrim of Frankville. Roy passed away in 1913, and Mrs. Birdsell reared three of his children, namely Bessie, now Mrs. Henry Amundson of Estherville; Leon, who lives in Monona and Leslie, who passed away in 1940. She is survived by seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a wide circle of friends -- each meaning so much to Grandma Birdsell.
Mrs. Birdsell became ill on Sunday, August 21 and passed away at 1:45 on Tuesday afternoon, August 30, at the age of 94 years. She was a member of the Baptist Church of which her father was pastor, until April 2, 1916, when she joined the Presbyterian church in Frankville.
