Theodore H. Balk

Theodore H. "Ted" Balk of Ossian died of natural causes Thursday, Feb. 27 at his home. He was 81.

He was born Sept. 13, 1915 in Eden, Iowa, the son of Carl and Catherine (Langreck) Balk. Ted was baptized and confirmed at St. Lukes Parish in St. Lucas and attended St. Lucas School.

He moved to the Ossian area in 1936. On March 30, 1937 Ted married Leona Bodensteiner at St. Francis De Sales Church, Ossian. He and Leona farmed in the Ossian and Castalia area until they moved into Ossian in 1973. Ted also worked for several area sale barns. He enjoyed turkey hunting, fishing and playing cards. He liked to repair small engines and was always ready to have a visit. Ted was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2073 and the Farm Bureau.

Survivors include his wife, Leona of Ossian; 5 daughters: Edna Borlaug of Protivin; Bernice (Roger) Holthaus of West Union; Phyllis (Jerry) Kapler of Waverly; Marilyn (Tom) Winger of Decorah; Betty (Jerry) Hebrink of Cresco; and 3 sons: Roger (Carol) of Decorah; David (Donna) of Waterloo and Joe (Gwen) of Frankville.

Also surviving are 25 grandchildren: Lori Renken; Michele Rotgers, Leah Harper, Sue Pelio, Danny Schwickerath, Tammy Knutson; Jackie Lensing, Cathy Cleveland, Cindy Pfemmer, Craig Borlaug, Todd Holthaus and his fiance, Jennifer Costa, Wendy Holthaus, Christopher Holthaus, Brenda Boleyn; Mike Kapler, Jennifer Kapler, Jerad Winger, Emily Winger, Annette Stahr, Chad Nierling, Angelyn Balk, Joshua Balk, Heather Balk, Justin Balk and Cody Balk. Also 13 great grandchildren: LeAnn and Kendrick Renken, Kenny, Erica, Rebecca, Ryan and Nicole Rotgers, Chance Pelo, Kia Knutson, Brelynn and Bryce Lensing, Trevor Cleveland and Derek Pfremmer; a brother, Ray Balk of Rock Falls, Ill. and 2 sisters: Germaine Steffes of Sterling, Ill. and Geneva Dravis of Morrison, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Elaine Schwickerath in 1984; a son, Carl in 1967; 2 brothers, Tony Balk and Leonard Balk; 4 sisters, Agnes Bodensteiner, Clara Balk, Helen Reisner and Mathilda Hlubek and 2 sons-in-laws, Dale Nierling in 1985 and David Borlaug in 1993.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 3, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian. The Rev. Richard Kuhn officiated. Interment was in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery with Schmitz Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Honorary casket bearers were Lori Renken, Michele Rotgers, Leah Harper, Sue Pelio, Tammy Knutson, Jackie Lensing, Cathy Cleveland, Cindy Pfemmer, Wendy Holthaus, Brenda Boleyn, Jennifer Kapler, Emily Winger, Annette Stahr, Angelyn Balk and Heather Balk.

Casket bearers were Danny Schwickerath, Craig Borlaug, Todd Holthaus, Christopher Holthaus, Mike Kapler, Jerad Winger, Chad Nierling, Joshua Balk, Justin Balk and Cody Balk.
