Lucille M. Hart of Decorah, Iowa died peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 following a 3-month battle with brain cancer at the age of 76 years.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 3, 2005 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah by Rev. Gary F. Krapfl. Private family burial will be held at a later date.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Friday, December 2, 2005 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah where a vigil service will be held at 6:30 P.M. Friends may also call after 10:00 A.M. Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice, 901 Mongomery Street, Decorah, Iowa 52101.

Lucille Marie Hart was born January 4, 1929 at home in St. Martin, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Hildegard (Schaefer) Schmitz.

She was united in marriage to Donald D. Hart on January 31, 1951 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St Cloud, Minnesota. To this union, eight children were born: Deborah, Larry, Sandra, Patricia, Nancy, Leann, Linda and Lanny.

Lucille and Don spent the early years of their married life in Minnesota and North Dakota. They moved to Decorah in 1966 and purchased the Decorah Bakery, renaming it Hart’s Quality Bakery. The couple owned and operated the bakery until they sold the business and retired in 1997. For the last five years, Lucille was employed part time at the Decorah Walmart Store.

Lucille was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed traveling, tending the large garden at her home, reading, and most of all, spending time with her family. Lucille was a people person, and will always be remembered for her warm and genuine smile.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Donald of Decorah; eight children, Deborah (Howard) Fischer of West Des Moines, IA, Larry Hart of West Des Moines, Sandra (Tim) Anderson of Woodbury, MN, Patricia (John) Ryan of Eagan, MN, Nancy (Jim) Manning of Boston, MA, Leann (Ron) Abraham of Cedar Falls, IA, Linda Luedtke of Barrington, IL and Lanny (Lisa) Hart of Altoona, IA; nineteen grandchildren; eight brothers and sisters, Ernie (Barb) Schmitz of Sergeant Bluff, IA, Virginia (Aloys) Pfannenstein of St. Joseph, MN, Angie (Delbert) Gillitzer of Waite Park, MN, Lillian (Elmer) Notsch of Hines, MN, Donald (Luella) Schmitz of Cottage Grove, MN, Alcuin Schmitz of Richmond, MN, Doris (Jack) Holthaus of St. Martin, MN and Floribert (Rose) Schmitz of Roscoe, MN; two sisters-in-law, Arlene Schmitz of St. Joseph, MN and Irene (Myron) Liebman of Miami, FL, brothers-in-law, Wayne (Shirley) Hart of Henderson, NV and Dale (Donna) Hart of Owatonna, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Walter Schmitz; a son-in-law, Ken Luedtke and a sister-in-law, Jenny Schmitz.

No…a word that wasn’t in Mother’s vocabulary. Outstanding journey of 76 years. Painting pictures to painting her walls! Quality in everything she did! “Hart’s Quality Bakery” Roast beef every Sunday. Smile always on her face:) Two o’clock mornings at the bakery. Unique. Visionary. Vegas trips. Vibrant! Worker-bee! Wal-Mart. “What’s new with you?” calls…will be dearly missed! Xtraordinary! Age 75 climbed Effigy Mounds, Niagara Cave & Pulpit Rock. Youthful! Zest for life…at all of her ages!
