Henry Morris Aschim was born August 25, 1912, to Hans and Marie (Nelson) Aschim in Glenwood Township (Decorah), Iowa. He was baptized on September 15, 1912 and confirmed on May 22, 1927 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Decorah. He went to country school through 8th grade and attended Decorah High School where he was active in glee club, track and excelled in football, playing left tackle. In his senior year, the football team won the Northeast Iowa conference championship. He graduated with the Class of 1931. Following high school, Henry enlisted in Citizens Military Training Corps in Fort Des Moines. He returned to Glenwood where he worked on the John Estrem farm for 2 years. During this time, Henry was a boxer in the Decorah athletic club. On December 30, 1933, he married his high school sweet heart, Alice Irene Rue, of Ridgeway, Iowa, at the Lincoln Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. They continued farming on his grandmother’s farm in Glenwood Township for 2 years. In 1935, Henry and Irene purchased the Chester Corner Café in Chester, Iowa. Henry’s sister, Palma, worked with them.
They lived in Chester 3 years, during which time their daughters Marilyn and Cheryl were born. In 1939, they sold the café and moved to Canton, MN, where they bought the old bank building and started up a pop corn business, “Aschim’s Golden Toasted”. They had popcorn routes all over northeast Iowa, selling pop corn to grocery stores, and filling stations and 3 ballrooms. After 2 years, they sold the popcorn business to Roger Rue, Irene’s brother. In 1940, they lived in Ridgeway for 10 years, and then lived on the farm for 52 years. Henry purchased the Sunnyside Tavern and operated it for 7 years. His interest in farming led him to purchase land near Ridgeway. Henry operated a dairy farm and sold Grade A milk. Two daughters, Cindy and LeAnn joined the family during this time. Henry and Irene attended Ridgeway Lutheran Church, then Peace Lutheran Church where they were involved in many activities.
Henry retired from dairy farming in 1972 and began a hobby of building clocks. He made more than 60 clocks. When Irene turned 65, he bought her a life time fishing license and for the next 20 years, they spent many hours trout fishing in northeast Iowa streams. They were active in the Sons of Norway, serving in many offices.
In 2002, Henry and Irene moved to an assisted living facility in Mankato, Minnesota.
Henry died of a sudden illness at the age of 92 on Monday, June 27, 2005, at Sibley Manor, an assisted living facility in Mankato, Minnesota.
