Melvin Thompson, age 82 of Decorah, Iowa, died at his home on Tuesday, March 27, 2007, after a long Illness.

Funeral Services will be Saturday March 31, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah by Rev Steven Jacobsen with burial in the Canoe Ridge Cemetery rural Decorah

Visitation will be on Friday March 30, 2007 at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah from 4:00 – 7:00 and after 10 at the church on Saturday

Melvin Burton Thompson was born on August 1, 1924, on the family farm in Sumner Township, rural Winneshiek County, the son of Benjamin and Amanda (Albertson) Thompson. Melvin was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Ridgeway. He attended the Sumner Township country school. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Hanson on September 21, 1947, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children: Lynn and Karen. In 1952, he was employed at Holland Brothers Construction Company until his retirement. After his retirement, he and Phyllis traveled the United States on trips with friends. Melvin enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting. Recently his favorite pastime was watching the deer leisurely stroll through his back yard, his greatest love was his family. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church.

Melvin’s survivors include his wife, Phyllis Thompson, Decorah, IA. Two daughters: Lynn Hearn, Livermore, CA and Karen Thompson, Decorah, IA. Two grandchildren: Sarah Willets, Pleasanton, CA and David “Ben” Hearn, San Francisco, CA. Two brothers: Ernest (Lois) Thompson, Decorah, IA and Einer (Margaret) Thompson, Calmar, IA. Two sisters: Jeanette (Mel) Wilhelm, Cresco, IA and Beverly Starkey, Waterloo, IA. One sister-in-law: Eileen Cross, Canby, OR.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents. One infant son: David Michael Thompson. One brother: Stanley Thompson. One sister: Alice Thompson. One brother-in-law: Morey Cross.
