Viola A. Tessmer, age 96, passed away to be with our Lord on January 20, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, IA. She was a resident at Pioneer Park in Lone Tree, IA and formerly of Calmar and Waucoma IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at St Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Waucoma, IA.

The family will greet friends and relatives from 9:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the funeral Mass at St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

The Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.

Viola Ann (Huinker) Tessmer, was born August 14, 1914, in Festina, IA, the daughter of Joseph and Johanna (Braun) Huinker. Viola attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina. She married Earl Tessmer on November 29, 1934, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waucoma, IA. Viola and Earl raised their five children on a livestock/dairy farm north of Waucoma. Viola loved family gatherings, gardening, managing the household and playing cards. After Earl's retirement, she could be found on the golf course with her husband or friends. Viola was a charter member and past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America Queenship of Mary Court in Waucoma. Viola and Earl retired to Calmar in 1974, where she lived until 2005.

Viola’s survivors include her five children: Charles (Joanne) Tessmer, Cedar Rapids, IA; Elaine (Donald) Kout, Lone Tree, IA; Betty Cummins, Phoenix, AZ; Carol (Joe) Salais, Walnut Creek, CA.; and Michael (Carol) Tessmer, Avon on the Lake OH; along with eleven grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren.

Viola was preceded in death by her husband Earl of sixty-three years, on August 9, 1997. Her parents: Joseph and Johanna Huinker. Ten older brothers and sisters: Arnold Huinker, Alfred Huinker, Leo Huinker, Edmund Huinker, Oscar Huinker, Victor Huinker, Gregory Huinker, Volburga Zweibohmer, Albina Schneberger, and Beatrice Schissel. One son-in-law: Edward Cummins.
