Einer L. Thompson, age 80, of Calmar, IA, died on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at the St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 17, 2010, at the Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Gary Lee presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Thursday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, Iowa, and after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Friday morning.

Einer LaVerne Thompson was born on October 11, 1930, the son of Ingvald Benjiman and Amanda Mathilda (Albertson) Thompson, in Sumner Township, rural Spillville, IA. Einer was baptized by Rev. H.M. Normann, on October 26, 1930 at home. Baptism sponsors included Ellen and Sander Thompson, Oscar Thompson, & Ruth Thompson Blekeberg. Pastor Arthur W. Sorenson confirmed Einer on June 3, 1945, at the Ridgeway United Lutheran Church (Peace Lutheran Church). Einer graduated from the schools of Winneshiek County on May 21, 1946. He was inducted into the US Army on October 25, 1955. He served two years of active duty and four years of ready-reserves followed by an honorable discharge on Sept. 30, 1961. Einer married Margaret “Cookie” Kala (daughter of Katherine Marjorie Blaess and Joseph Stephen Kala) on June 5, 1960, by Pastor L.C. Anderson at the Calmar Lutheran Church in Calmar, Iowa. Einer was employed as a carpenter for most of his working career. He worked for Decorah Builders for ten years (1960-70) and Finholt Construction from 1970-2006. Einer was a very patient and soft spoken man who was always ready to help others. Einer enjoyed having coffee at Chase the Adventure and many Saturday morning breakfasts and coffees at the Bakery in Decorah. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and working on carpenter projects. He was an excellent carpenter and enjoyed fine wood work finishing. Einer worked on many area projects at the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum, Luther College, and many of the banks in Decorah. He also helped build many homes big and small; building his own home in Calmar in 1966. Einer transferred his church membership to the Calmar Lutheran Church on March 9, 1962, where Einer volunteered at church by ushering and doing repair work. Einer and Margaret are the baptismal sponsors for the following people: Darrell Thompson, Dennis Wilhelm, Tracy Anderson, Karen Thompson, Duane Albertson, Jason Wilhelm and Christine Hellen.

Einer is survived by his loving wife of fifty years: Margaret “Cookie” Thompson, Calmar, IA. One daughter: Beth (Scott) Ferguson, Suwanee, GA. One son: Scott R. Thompson, Calmar, IA. Two grandchildren: Gage and Finn Ferguson. Two sisters: Jeanette Wilhelm, Mesa, AZ, and Beverly Starkey, Waterloo, IA. One brother: Ernest (Lois Mae) Thompson, Decorah, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Phyllis Thompson, Decorah, IA, and Virginia (Paul) Pavlovec, Calmar, IA. One brother-in-law: Ronald (Kathy) Anderson, Lawler, IA. One aunt: Ruth Thompson Blekeberg, Decorah, IA, along with many friends, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Einer was preceded in death by his parents: Ingvald Benjiman and Amanda Mathilda (Albertson) Thompson. Two brothers: Melvin Thompson and Stanley Thompson. One sister: Alice Thompson. One sister-in-law: JoAnne (Kala) Anderson. Two brothers-in-law: Mel Wilhelm and Robert Kala. Einer’s mother and fathers-in-law: Katherine (Jim) Koshatka and Joseph Kala.
