Gillmer Seegmiller, age 95, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Monday, February 7, 2011, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa.

Memorial Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, with Rev. John Braaten presiding. Burial will be Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.

Gillmer J. Seegmiller was born on January 5, 1916, at Locust, Iowa. He attended Decorah High School and Luther College. After college, he worked as a manager for JC Penney Co. in Waukon, IA, before being drafted into the the US Army. He served with the 103rd in the Rhineland in Central Europe. During that time, he was injured twice, receiving two Purple Hearts, the Oak Leaf cluster and the Bronze Star. After returning from the war, he was a station manager for the Milwaukee Road followed by working with the Post Office as a rural carrier on Route #1, until retiring in 1982. He was one of the first World War II veterans to join the DAV, where he also served as Commander. In retirement, he researched and authored the book “Decorah, City of Springs”, a book about the history of Water Street. He also traveled numerous times to Europe in part to further his genealogy research, honed his wine making skills, refinished furniture, and was active in the local Square Dance club.

Gillmer’s survivors include his wife: Eleanor Seegmiller, Decorah, IA. One daughter: Julie (John) Braaten, Mesa, AZ. One son: Steve (Deborah) Seegmiller, West Lake Village, CA. Five grandchildren: Jeff (Teri) Braaten, Jay (Alisa) Braaten, Heather Amundson, Alan (Laura) Seegmiller and Susan (Justin) Knight, along with nine great grandchildren.
