Roman A. Schmitt, age 85, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a long illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2008, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 2:00-8:00 p.m. on Sunday and on Monday morning from 8:00 - 10:00 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa.

There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture wake service at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Roman Aloysius Schmitt was born on September 17, 1922, the son of Peter T. and Mary (Blong) Schmitt near St. Lucas, Iowa. Roman attended school in St. Lucas and received his GED in 1973. He farmed with his father near St. Lucas. He married Therese Kuhn on May 7, 1952, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar. Together they farmed south of Fort Atkinson until 1991, when they retired and moved into town. Roman continued to help on the farm and enjoyed cultivating corn and raking hay. He also enjoyed a good game of softball with his family and loved watching the Cardinals win, and the Cubs lose. Roman enjoyed polka music, Collie dogs, forecasting the weather and watching the birds. His greatest joy was playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Roman received the Winneshiek County Pioneer Dairyman Award in 1992. Roman was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, serving on the parish council, the Forester’s and the Farm Bureau.

Roman is survived by his wife: Therese Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA. Six daughters: Barb (Leon) Vsetecka, Fort Atkinson, IA; Joan (Dale) Beckman, Ossian, IA; Cathy (Chad) Kuboushek, Ridgeway, IA; Dorothy (Gene) Elsbernd, Decorah, IA; Margie (Tim) Murray, Mankato, MN and Marie (Gary) Elsbernd, Calmar, IA. Five sons: Gerry (Kay) Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA; Steve (Debby) Schmitt; Joe (Katie) Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA; Jim (Christie) Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA and Bob (Julie) Schmitt, Marion, IA. Forty-three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Four sisters: Coletta Busta, Fort Atkinson, IA; Leona (Wilfred) Dietzenbach, St. Lucas, IA; Cordula Doucet, Caledonia, MN and Rose (Merlin) Rilling, Fort Atkinson, IA. Four brothers-in-law: Brother Sebastian Kuhn, Lisle, IL; Anthony (Colette) Kuhn, Cresco, IA; Jerome (Carlene) Kuhn, New Hampton, IA and Jim Bentz, Dubuque, IA. Three sisters-in-law: Rita Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA; Madonna Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA and Anna Mae Kuhn, Calmar, IA, and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Roman was preceded in death by his parents: Peter and Mary (Blong) Schmitt. One great grandson: Matthew Vsetecka. Three brothers: John E. Schmitt, Alfred Schmitt and Robert in infancy. One sister: Theola Schaefer. Four brothers-in-law: Jacob Busta, Jim Schaefer, Joe Doucet and Ray Kuhn. One sister-in-law: Margaret Mary Bentz.
