Lee Thomas Schissel, age 62, passed away at Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, on Monday, February 5, 2007, following a long illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2007, at St. Francis – de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa, with Monsignor Cletus Hawes officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call after 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Arrangements are being handled by the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and School.

Lee Thomas was born to Elmer and Beatta (Holtey) Schissel in Decorah, IA, on January 16, 1945. He was a member of St. Francis parish in Ossian, where he received the sacraments and attended twelve years of school. He graduated from De Sales High School in 1963. Lee never married. He worked for Reilly Construction in Ossian and Frommelt’s Manufacturing in Dubuque. He enlisted in the Navy Seabees in 1966. In Vietnam, he helped to build airport runways. While home on leave in 1967, he suffered severe brain injury in a one-car auto accident. After that accident, he resided in Veteran Institutions. He spent thirty-four years at Knoxville, IA, in the Veteran’s home before moving to the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, IA, in July of 2002. Lee loved his family and friends. As a young man he enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, roller skating and hunting small game with friends and cousins. He was a very likable individual, with a constant smile. Nurses always told us he was a pleasure to care for because he was so friendly; always smiling, winking and shaking their hand. He spoke very little. The family is very indebted and grateful to the caregivers for these many years of outstanding compassionate care extended to Lee.

Lee is survived by his two brothers: Donald (Joan) Schissel, Ossian, IA and Vern (Sharleen) Schissel, Dubuque, IA. His twin sister: Lynn (Steve) Wolf, Minnetonka, MN. One sister-in-law: Cleone Schissel, Milan, IL, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Darrell and William Schissel; and niece: Peggy Swift.
