Robert “Bob” Schissel, age 60, passed away at his home in Temecula, California, on May 28, 2011, of Leukemia.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 25, 2011, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding.

Friends may call on Friday, June 24, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Calmar. There will be a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials may be given in memory of Bob to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, P.O. Box 4072, Pittsfield, MA 01202.

Robert “Bob” Paul Schissel was born in November 29, 1950, in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Paul and Angela (Hageman) Schissel. He graduated in 1969 from South Winneshiek High School. Because of his love for cooking, he then attended the Minneapolis Area Vocational Technical School, studying to be a chef. He served in the Army from 1970 to 1972, spending most of his service as a cook at Fort Lewis, Washington. After the service, he worked in several restaurants in Rochester, Minnesota. After moving to California in 1975, he started his career at United Airlines in the Food Service Division where he worked in many positions before transferring to Customer Service in 1990, then to Air Freight in 1998. After his 30 year career at United, he retired in 2005. Bob loved to travel; visiting Switzerland, where he learned to ski. He also traveled to Hong Kong, Japan, Tahiti, France, Australia, Mexico, the Caribbean and many trips to Hawaii. He played softball for many years including on the United Airlines traveling team, but his passion was for golf which he played as often as possible.

Bob is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peggy” Horn Schissel, and daughter, Katherine Ann Arbaugh, both of Temecula, CA. Four sisters: Dorothy Quirk, and her husband Frank, The Villages, FL; Rita Kuhner, Orinda, CA; Helen Hruska, and her husband, Walter, Rochester, MN; and Betty Hruska and her husband, Gene, West Union, IA. Three brothers, Alvin Schissel, and his wife, Marian, Rice Lake, WI; Dick Schissel, Mesa, AZ; and Kenneth Schissel, and his wife, Mary, Calmar, IA, along with twenty-three nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his father, Paul Albert Schissel, and his mother, Angela Hageman Schissel.
