Robert “Bob” Sand, age 81, of Decorah, Iowa died on Thursday, February 24, 2005 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 28, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa with Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Allen Vik officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa with full military rites by the Helof Holm VFW Chapter #1977.
Friends may call on Sunday from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, Iowa and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Monday morning. There will be a VFW Memorial Service at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home Sunday afternoon.
Robert John Sand was born on August 30, 1923 the son of Nanfred and Sylvia (Forde) Sand in Ossian, Iowa. Bob attended Ossian Public School and graduated in 1941. He attended Luther College for one year before entering the US Navy where he served with the Sea Bees in the South Pacific during WWII. After the war, he returned to Ossian and married Verna K. Amdahl on June 16, 1948 at Stavanger Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa. They farmed south of Ossian for a couple of years before moving to Decorah where Bob worked at the Winneshiek County Court House as Deputy Clerk of Court and then Clerk of Court from 1950 to 1962. He then joined Security Bank and Trust (now Decorah Bank & Trust) where he was employed for twenty-six years. He retired from the bank in 1988, remaining as a Director on its Board to the present day. Bob was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church and the Helof –Holm VFW Chapter 1977. He enjoyed sports and was an avid supporter of Decorah High School athletics. He appreciated nature and all aspects of farm life. His hobbies included reading, genealogy, carpentry/woodworking, and fixing anything mechanical. His greatest love was being with and doing things for his family and friends. Bob's survivors include his wife, Verna Amdahl Sand, Decorah, IA. Children: Alan Sand & wife Cara, Richardson, TX; Kevin Sand & wife Leslie, Decorah, IA; Dan Sand & wife Carole, Decorah, IA; Robyn Sand Anderson & husband Jon, New Ulm, MN and Doug Sand & wife Ronda, Zumbrota, MN. Eleven grandchildren: Rachel & Allyson Sand; Jennifer & Robert Sand; Erik & Karl Sand; Laura, Sean and Caitlyn Anderson; Kaia and Annika Sand. Five sisters: Helen Sand Schaeffer, Decorah, IA; Shirley Brainard, Postville, IA; Marjorie Golden & husband Tom, Henderson, NV; Janet Pinch, Henderson, NV and Elaine Evans & husband Robert, Indianola, IA. Three brothers: Nanfred "Bud" Sand, Jr. & wife Carol, Ottawa, IL; Richard Sand & wife Tina, Whittier, CA and Jacob Sand, Boulder City, NV and many nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Gregory Sand.
