Arlene Rasmussen, age 79, of Decorah, Iowa died on Friday, September 9, 2005 at the Barthell Eastern Star Home in Decorah, Iowa following a long illness.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 12, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa with Rev. Susan Debner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Monday morning.
Arlene “Babe” Rasmussen was born on June 21, 1926 the daughter of Olaf and Ruby (Loney) Fretheim in Madison Township, rural Decorah, Iowa. Arlene attended country school and then graduated from Decorah High School on May 17, 1945. Arlene worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone as an operator; at the Decorah Creamery as a bookkeeper and for many years as the deputy city clerk for the City of Decorah, retiring in 1988. Arlene married Ervin Rasmussen on June 20, 1948 at the Madison Lutheran Church. Arlene enjoyed quilting, sewing, rosmaling and dancing with Erv. Arlene was a member of the Canoe Ridge Lutheran Church, Ladies Aide, Circle and the Skyline Polka Club.
Arlene’s survivors include her husband: Ervin Rasmussen, Decorah, IA. One daughter: Viann (Howard) Clancy, Waverly, IA and one son: Gary (Cindy) Rasmussen, Knoxville, IA. Four grandchildren: Adam & Elizabeth Clancy and Owen & Travis Rasmussen. One sister: Olive Sims, Decorah, IA. One brother: Herbert (Ruth) Fretheim, Decorah, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Mae (Norman) Brynsaas and Selma (Russell) Nelson, both of Decorah, IA and one brother-in-law: Ray Rasmussen, Waukon, IA and several nieces and nephews.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents and one brother-in-law: Harold Sims.
