Mabel I. Olson, age 80, of Decorah, Iowa died on Thursday, April 28, 2005 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa following a brief illness.
Memorial services will be held on Monday, May 2, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at the Glenwood Lutheran Church with Rev. Susan Debner officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.
There will be a time to greet the family on Sunday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah with a 6:00 p.m. VFW Women’s Auxiliary Memorial Service Sunday evening.
Mabel Imogene (Peterson) Olson was born on December 25, 1924 in Decorah, Iowa the daughter of Gilbert and Ingrid (Kirkeberg) Peterson. Mabel grew up on a farm in Frankville Township, along Highway 9. Mabel was confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church. She attended the Pagin country school and graduated from Decorah High school in 1943. After graduation, Mabel worked for Coca Cola. Mabel married Donald Olson on December 21, 1947 at the Glenwood Lutheran Church. Mabel was the bookkeeper for her husband at Olson Explosives for many years, retiring in 1974. Together, she and Don spent the last thirty-three years wintering in Florida and enjoyed all the activities where they stayed. Mabel enjoyed painting scenery, gardening, making crafts, crossword puzzles, baking and watching birds at her bird bath. In 2004, when their health was deteriorating, they came back to Decorah to live. Mabel was a member of the Glenwood Lutheran Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Mabel’s survivors include her husband, Donald Olson, Decorah, IA; One brother-in-law: Kenneth Olson & wife Helen, Decorah, IA. Two sisters-in-law: Florence Olson and Marjorie Peterson Dehning, Decorah, IA. Several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Elmer, Kenneth, Herbert and Selmer Peterson and one sister: Luella Lovstuen.
