Irene Doris Olson, 88, passed from her long and eventful life on Saturday, February 26, 2011, following a short-lived residence at the Cresco Care Center in Cresco, Iowa.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday April 19, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah with Rev. Matthew H. Perkins officiating. Visitation is from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. A private family burial will occur earlier in the morning at Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah.
Irene was born on November 21, 1922 in Decorah, Iowa to Henry Lubke and Sena (Vick) Lubke. She was a graduate of Decorah High School where she played basketball and participated in class activities. She married Darrell Edward Olson in January 1946 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. They celebrated 55 years of marriage before Darrell’s passing in 2001.
Irene enjoyed the love of her many brothers and sisters, the Olson family and Decorah friends. While most of her life was devoted to the care and nurturing of her husband, children and grandchildren, her parents and the children of her siblings, she spread her wings upon retirement and enjoyed spending time with her husband and family in Northern Minnesota at Bowens Resort. There, she enjoyed hiking the woods, fishing Lake Winnie, and cooking with friends from near and far. She especially enjoyed friendly card games with dear friends Don and Marion, her children and grandchildren. She was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and interested in political goings-on. She was especially proud that her children were Luther College graduates.
The Lubkes were a hardy family, and Irene the youngest of nine children. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sisters Frances Lubke, Alice (Harry) Steine and Ethel (Lawrence) Dahle; and brothers Raymond Lubke, Robert (Thelma) Lubke; Fred (Alice) Lubke; Roger (Ethel) Lubke; and Herbert (Eva) Lubke.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Eric (Mary) Olson, Sioux Falls, SD, Susan Olson, Ames, IA, and Steven (Claudia) Olson, Dickerson, MD; grandchildren Lynne Olson, Ames, IA and Elizabeth Olson, Sioux Falls, SD; and many nieces, nephews, and loving friends.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Rev. Matthew Perkins and Rev. Amy Perkins for their love and guidance over the past many years. Also, their gratitude for the love and gentle care given to their Mother by the staff at Cresco Care Center, and to the staff at Loving Touch for their kind heart and expert care, which enabled Irene to remain at home for as long as possible. They also wish to thank Irene’s dear friends at Washington Court. The family is forever grateful.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Food Pantry at First Lutheran Church or to the Youth Ministry at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Decorah.
