Joseph F. Kruse, age 72, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Friday, August 29, 2008, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 2, 2008, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, and on Tuesday morning until 10:00 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 5:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

Joseph “Joe” Francis Kruse was born November 8, 1935, in Ft. Atkinson, IA, to Joseph and Teresa (Makovec) Kruse. Joe attended school at St John’s Elementary and graduated from the Ft. Atkinson High School. Joe served in the U. S. Air Force. After returning home from the military, Joe worked construction, first with Myers Brothers, then for Holland Construction, Rausch Construction and Roverud Construction. Joe married Beatrice Phillips on September 27, 1969 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Ft. Atkinson, IA. Joe enjoyed going to stock car races with his son and daughter, playing cards, and tinkering in his garage. Joe was a member of Huber-Steffes American Legion in Ft. Atkinson and was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church.

Joe’s survivors include his daughter: Julie (Kevin) Ellis, Phoenix, AZ. One son: Brian Kruse, Ft. Atkinson, IA. Two grandsons: Blake Kruse and Andrew Ellis. One brother: Clarence Kruse, Decorah, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Ben (Geraldine) Phillips, Harmony, MN and Barton Phillips, Fredericksburg, IA.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents. His wife: Beatrice, November 7, 1990. Two brothers: William and Richard Kruse. One brother-in-law: Bernard Phillips. Mother-in-law and father-in-law: Mary and James Phillips.
