James "Jim" Herold, age 77, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Monday, December 7, 2009, at the Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah, Iowa.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 11, 2009, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman presiding. Burial will be held in the church cemetery with Military Rites.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 10, 2009, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.

James Raymond Herold was born on June 12, 1932, the son of Paul and Theresa (Korzendorfer) Herold on the family farm near Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Jim attended rural country school and graduated from Fort Atkinson Public School in 1950. He served in the US Army from 1950-1971, retiring as Master Sergeant. Jim also served as a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon Communications Center, in Washington, DC. While serving in Korea, Jim received a purple heart. He married Patsy Holmes on June 8, 1953, in Lucedale, Mississippi. After his military service, he returned to Fort Atkinson and worked as a security guard at Sara Lee Foods in New Hampton, Iowa, for twenty-one years. While working at Sara Lee, Jim attended Area One in Calmar, getting degrees in masonry, carpentry and electrical work. Jim then worked as a handyman in the Fort Atkinson area for many years. Jim loved to go fishing, tie flies, make lures and do fly rod repairs. He also enjoyed reading books and recording country music. Jim was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Turkey River VFW Post #3902, Huber Steffes American Legion Post #672, Disabled American Veterans, and the National Order of the Purple Heart. Jim also served on the Fort Atkinson City Council and helped to put the handicap dock in at Lake Meyer.

Jim is survived by his wife: Patsy Herold, Fort Atkinson, IA. Two daughters: Brenda (Alan) McKean, Portland, OR, and Linda (Marty) Bell, Phoenix, AZ. Two sons: Paul (Penny) Herold, Fort Atkinson, IA, and James “Zbart” (Candy) Herold, Calmar, IA. Four grandchildren: Nellie & P.J. Herold and Blake & Benjamin Biesecker. One great granddaughter: Star Lena Biesecker. Two brothers: Jack (Ann) Herold, Ft. Atkinson, IA and Jerry (Audrey) Herold, Marshalltown, IA. One sister: Mary (Merlyn) Phillips, Spillville, IA. Two brothers-in-law: Oliver Wendel (Boots) Holmes, Jr., Tallahasee, FL and Joe (Becky) Holmes, Cedar Rapids, IA. Three sisters-in-law: Rita Thomas, Tower, MI; Rosa Octava Constable, Woodenville, WA and Juanita McKinney, Smiths, AL.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents: Paul and Theresa (Korzendorfer) Herold.
