Evelyn Headington, age 92, of Decorah, IA, died on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 22, 2012, at the United Methodist Church, 302 West Broadway in Decorah, IA, with Rev. Marlea Gilbert presiding. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery, Decorah, IA.

Friends may call from 3:00-6:00 p.m., on Tuesday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Wednesday morning.

Evelyn Beatha (Vine) Headington, was born on December 14, 1919, the daughter of Ernest and Alma Christina (Hanson) Vine on the family farm in Madison Township. Evelyn graduated with the Decorah class of 1937. She was united in marriage to Gerald Headington on December 26, 1937, at the First Lutheran Parsonage in Decorah. Evelyn was a farmwife while raising her family. In 1960, Evelyn and Ethel Sensor started the lunch stand at the Winneshiek Co-op Sale Barn and ran it for several years. Evelyn also worked at Mode ‘O Day clothing store. Over the years, Evelyn and Gerald enjoyed dancing, playing cards, traveling to baseball games and visiting family all over the United States and Canada. One of her favorite things was to go to social gatherings with family and friends. She loved to talk about her children and their families, while showing photos of all her family members and trips. In 1989, she moved into Decorah, living in apartments until she entered the Aase Haugen Nursing Home on January 25, 2011. Some of her activities included being a 4-H Leader for the Charming Canoers, Farm Bureau Women, I.O.O.F Rebecca Lodge, Madison Willing Workers, and the Birthday Club. Evelyn was a member of the United Methodist Church, where she was active in the Circles, Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school.

Evelyn is survived by one daughter: Ellen Halverson, Ridgeway, IA. One son: Jerry (Diane) Headington, Cedar Falls, IA. One daughter-in-law: Brenda Headington, Decorah, IA. Thirteen grandchildren: William B. Headington, Becky Courtney, Beth Headington, Jeff (Katy) Halverson, Keith (Tina) Halverson, Larry (Bonnie) Halverson, Robert (Joyce) Halverson, Roger (Becky) Halverson, Lyle Halverson, Janice (John) Grafenburg, Jerry Lee (Jennifer) Headington, Janet Headington, and James (Barbara) Headington, along with twenty-eight great grandchildren and eleven great great grandchildren. Two brothers: Vernon (Darlene) Vine, Decorah, IA, and Ernest Vine, Burlingham, WA. Four sisters-in-law: Helen Lee Vine, Decorah, IA; Vesta Hicks, Moose Lake, MN; Joyce Erickson, Harmony, MN; and Audrey Wolsdorf, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents: Ernest & Christine Vine. Her husband: Gerald Headington in 1979. Daughter: Diane Headington in 1968. Son: William “Bill” Headington in 2009. Son-in-in-law: Harry Halverson in 2009. Her father and mother-in-law: Wallace and Martha (Olson) Headington. Sister: Arlene Perry in 1986. Brother: Charles Vine in 2003. Sisters and brothers-in-law: Helen Pitman Vine, Vivian Arneson, Evelyn Lockwood, Wayne Headington, Murial Cronin, Reuel “Bub” Headington, and Martha Hanson. One great grandson: Nathan Halverson.
