Bufford William Fullhart was born on September 26, 1912, the son of William and Wilma (Albright) Fullhart in Exline, Missouri. Bufford graduated from Centerville High School in 1930, where he was an all-state basketball and baseball player. After the Depression, he worked for a Conservation Camp, planting many trees on the Luther College Campus and at a park in Duluth, MN. He moved to Chicago to find work and ended up being a private chauffeur for the largest stock holder of Carson, Pierre, Scott & Co. and for Kenneth G. Smith, owner of Pepsodent Toothpaste. Bufford married Ruth M. Stenborg on November 19, 1936. He worked then as a landscape gardener for Mrs. Jenner, on the North Shore, near Chicago. Bufford then took a job doing research, for the Portland Cement Association in Skokie, Illinois as a foreman in the concrete structural lab. He conducted tests on concrete that was used to build the Sears Tower and toll road bridges. He retired in 1980 and moved to Arkansas for three years and then to Hesper in 1983, to be near his son and family. Bufford loved “the River” and moved to Lansing for a few years, before returning to Decorah in 1998. Bufford kept a daily journal of all the barges that went by his home in Lansing, day or night for many years. Bufford was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school. He enjoyed calling square dancing, was an avid gardener, and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. Bufford served as a Senior Senator in the Older Iowan’s Legislature from 1989-90.

Bufford’s survivors include his two sons: Bufford Dwaine “Bud” (Ellen) Fullhart, Sequim, WA and Ron (Linda) Fullhart, Decorah, IA.
