Victor Gordon Halverson, 92, Ossian, Iowa, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at home. Victor was born December 20, 1919, at home in rural Decorah, Iowa, to Ole and Ida (Nerlie) Halverson. He was baptized and confirmed at Springfield Lutheran Church. He grew up on a farm north of Ossian, Iowa. At the age of 21, Victor completed basic training and went on to serve honorably in the United States Army Ski Troops for four years.

Victor was united in marriage to Pearl Dvorak on September 6, 1947, at Springfield Lutheran Church. They were the proud parents of two adopted children, Eugene and Elaine. In his earlier years, Victor worked as a farmhand, putting up snow fence for Winneshiek County and was a member of the REA clearing crew. He also worked as a dry cleaner for Sampson Cleaners, and was an assistant butter maker for Silver Springs Creamery, both located in Ossian, IA. In 1952, he purchased a bulk petroleum business from Joe Funk, and worked as a salesman delivering Farm Service bulk petroleum products until 1984. During his retirement years, he spent time tending trees for Bob Reilly, socializing with his friends at Bambino's, looked forward to playing poker with the "Poker Group", and enjoyed cribbage games with Pastor Roy.

Victor served as a volunteer fireman for over 30 years and held two terms on the Ossian City Council. He was a member of the Ossian Lutheran Church where he served on the church council. He was a member of the South Winn Golf & Country Club and a social member of the Silver Springs Golf & Country Club. He was a member of Brockman Hammersland Post 503 American Legion and V.F.W. Post No. 1977.

Survivors include his two children, Eugene (Joyce) Halverson, Ossian, Elaine (Joe) Lawrence, Cresco; five grandchildren, Brandi (Daniel) Gih, Ann Arbor, MI, Morgan Halverson, DeKalb, IL, Jena Halverson, Peosta, IA, Jonathan Lawrence, Cresco, IA, A1C Daniel Lawrence, F.E. Warren A.F.B., WY; sister, Myrtle (Arnold) Nesset, St. Augustine, FL; brother, Ernest Halverson, North Riverside, IL; sister-in-law, Ella Mae Dvorak, Waukon, IA; nieces and nephews, Charles (Mary) Nesset, Harrison, MI, Michael (Catherine) Nesset, Marietta, GA, Mary Kay (Jim) Hill, St. Augustine, FL, Bob (Linda) Halverson, Emmetsburg, IA, Sandi (Mel) Swan, Sycamore, IL, Linda (Doug) Franzen, Superior, CO, Donna (John) Druley, Andover, MN, Joni (Bill) Kuster, Lafayette, CO, Susan (Richard) Krueger, Aurora, IL, Rita Kessell, Chicago, IL, Richard (Linda) Rogness, Cedar Rapids, IA and many great nieces and nephews and his loyal friend and companion, Oscar.

Victor Gordon Halverson, 92, Ossian, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at home. Funeral Services were Thursday, March 22, at 11 a.m. at Ossian Lutheran Church, Ossian. Lay Pastor Roy Christophersen officiated. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery, Ossian, with military rites. Visitation was Wednesday, March 21, from 4-7 p.m. at the Schmitz – Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Ossian, is in charge of arrangements.
