Wilfrid F. Elsbernd, age 86, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, died on Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa, following a short illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 9, 2007, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, Iowa, with Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday and on Saturday morning until 9:30 a.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, Iowa. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 4:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon at the funeral home.

Wilfrid Francis Elsbernd was born on July 22, 1920, the son of Anton “Tony” and Rosalia (Timp) Elsbernd on the family farm near Fort Atkinson, Iowa. Wilfrid attended St. John’s Catholic School and farmed near Fort Atkinson, until he retired in 1980. After retirement, he worked for the Telephone Company and mowed grass for Winneshiek County Conservation. Wilfrid enjoyed fishing, gambling, and playing cards. His greatest joy was helping his nephew, Gene on the farm planting and harvesting. Wilfrid was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of the Foresters.

Wilfrid’s survivors include his four sisters: Marie Setter, Ft. Atkinson, IA; Rose Lansing, West Union, IA; Darlene (Clarence) Lansing, New Hampton, IA and Alice (Leonard) Myers, Waucoma, IA. Two brothers: Leo Elsbernd, Ossian, IA and Serenus “Cy” (Margaret) Elsbernd, Ft. Atkinson, IA. One sister-in-law: Alice Elsbernd, Ft. Atkinson, IA. One brother-in-law: Leonard Nolte, Waucoma, IA., and many nieces and nephews.

Wilfrid was preceded in death by his parents: Anton Elsbernd and Rosalia (Timp) Elsbernd both in 1968. One sister: Rita Nolte in 1995. Two brothers: Edward in infancy in 1935 and Andrew Elsbernd in 1999. One sister-in-law: Helen Elsbernd in 2001. Two brothers-in-law: Gerhard Setter in 2001 and Virgil Lansing in 1999.
