Romuald Elsbernd, age 86, of Calmar, IA, died on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 30, 2011, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, IA, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Calmar, IA.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Saturday morning. There will be a scripture service at 4:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Romuald Anton Elsbernd was born on February 6, 1925, the son of Frank and Ida (Heying) Elsbernd, on the family farm near Calmar, IA. Romuald attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Festina. He served in the Philippines during World War II in the US Army. After the Service, he started farming near Calmar. He married Dorothy Sabelka on June 30, 1947, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, IA; and to this union, four children were born: Karen, Mark, Dale, and Gene. Romuald farmed with his sons, Mark and Dale, retiring in 2008. After the death of his first wife, Dorothy in 1993, Romuald married Florine (Herold) Klimesh on August 23, 1997. Romuald enjoyed playing ball for the Festina baseball team, dancing at Polka Fests, golfing, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren. Romuald was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and the Halverson – Giesen American Legion Post #266 in Calmar.

Romuald is survived by his children: Karen (Peter) Phillips, Cedar Rapids, IA; Mark (Gloria) Elsbernd, Calmar, IA; Dale (Tracy) Elsbernd, Calmar, IA; and Gene (Dorothy) Elsbernd, Decorah, IA. Seventeen grandchildren: Sara (Rick) Gibbs & Aaron (Angela) Phillips; Rachael (Bryan) Tieskoetter, Jenny (Mitchell) Holthaus; Craig, Brian, Darin, Nicholas, Jonathan & Jason Elsbernd; Breelyn (Brian) Sauer, Reid (Missy) Elsbernd, Elise & Ivy Elsbernd; April Elsbernd, Amy (fiancé, Will Norton) & Grant Elsbernd. Eight great grandchildren: Toni, Will & Anna Phillips; Kylee, Austin & Elizabeth Tieskoetter; and Alyssa & Jadyn Holthaus. One brother, Cletus (Georgina) Elsbernd, Calmar, IA. One sister-in-law, Ruth Elsbernd, Calmar, IA, along with Florine’s children and grandchildren.

Romuald was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ida (Heying) Elsbernd; his first wife: Dorothy on October 19, 1993; and his second wife: Florine on December 23, 2010. One sister, Virginia (Virgil) Humpal, and two brothers: Linus and Myron Elsbernd.
