Joseph C. Berg, age 95, of Decorah, Iowa died on Monday, October 31, 2005 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa from a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at the Glenwood Lutheran Church, rural Decorah, Iowa with Rev. Susan Debner officiating. Burial will be in the Glenwood East Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.
Friends may call on Wednesday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home and after 12:30 p.m. at the church on Thursday afternoon.
Joseph Claudius Berg was born on September 23, 1910 the son of Karl and Ida (Kirkeby) Berg on the family farm in Glenwood Township. Joe was baptized and confirmed at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church. Joe attended country school in Glenwood Township and worked as a hired farm hand. Joe married Jeanette Hill on November 18, 1945 at the Glenwood Parsonage. Joe and Jeanette farmed in the Glenwood area before moving to Decorah in 1971. Joe then worked for Decorah Memorial Co., Luther College, the Eastern Star Nursing Home and the Oneota Golf Course. Joe enjoyed traveling, reading books on Norway and doing “word find” puzzles.
Joe’s survivors include one daughter, Gail Keefe & husband Bill, Decorah, IA. Three sons: Roger Berg & wife Marlene, Duane Berg & wife Jean and Jim Berg & wife Donna, all of Decorah, IA. Five grandchildren: Barbara Hemesath & husband Kurt, Lindsey Berg & husband Orion Espino, Dennis Keefe & wife Tiphanie, Ryan Gronna, Pat & wife Amy Gronna. Five great grandchildren: Eli, Austin & Katherine Hemesath and Sedona & Canyon Gronna. One sister: Cora Hendrickson, Decorah, IA. One brother-in-law: Ben Hill, Decorah, IA.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Jeanette Berg on March 6, 2003; one son in infancy; and one brother: Bennie Berg.
