Andrew Bakke, age 84, of Decorah, Iowa died on Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, Iowa following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, Decorah, Iowa with Rev. Kim Smith officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah, and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday.

Andrew Oswald Bakke was born on October 5, 1921 the son of Philip and Ida (Traaserud) Bakke at the Winneshiek Co. Memorial Hospital in Decorah, IA. Andrew attended Bakke country school and graduated from Decorah High School in 1939. Andrew and his father farmed together and had a very close relationship. Andrew married Eloise Lee on June 16, 1945 at the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church by Pastor Oscar Engebretson and Pastor Milo Lee. Last year they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary with their family. Together they farmed and lived on the same farm. Andrew was a very progressive farmer, being the first farm in the county to practice soil conservation. At the age of 20, Andrew was selected to be one of four individuals in the United States to attend a congressional hearing in Washington, DC, proposing a bill for additional funds for more leaders for 4-H activities. He began his speech by saying, “I come from the State of Iowa, where the tall corn grows” being proud of the state he lived in. Andrew was selected as the Decorahian of the Week when he was twenty years old. In Andrews’s younger years, he played baseball and raced his horse, Tony. He showed excellent cattle and hogs at various fairs and also served as a judge at the Iowa State Fair. He was a 4-H leader for ten years and on the Winn. Co. Fair Board for twenty-four years. Andrew was inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2003. Andrew was an avid deer and turkey hunter and enjoyed the companionship of his German shepherd dogs. He enjoyed his family, teaching them to water ski on the Mississippi River and on Clear Lake. Andrew was a member of the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church, serving as an usher, Deacon and Trustee.

Andrew’s survivors include his wife, Eloise Bakke, Decorah, IA. Two daughters: Corinne (Larry) Snell, Wausau, WI and Arleen (Jan) Krueger, Decorah, IA. One son: Alan (Chris) Bakke, Marshfield, WI. Four grandchildren: Stacy (Jason) Lunden, Erin (Christopher) Key, Allyson & Philip Bakke. One sister: Irene Hart, LaCrosse, WI. Andrew’s nephews and niece: Doug Blair, Bill Hart, Greg Hart and Cindy Shultz. Three sisters-in-law: Hazel Wangsness, Agnes Lee and Elaine Syverson & husband Ardell, all of Decorah, IA and Eloise’s nieces and nephews.

Andrew was preceded in death by his parents: Philip and Ida Bakke and one sister: Phyllis Blair on January 7, 2005.
