William “Bill” Meyer, age 75, of Fort Atkinson, IA, died on Friday, November 4, 2011, at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 8, 2011, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson, IA, with Rev. Nick March presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, and on Tuesday morning after 9:00 a.m., at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Chekal Chapel in Fort Atkinson, IA. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 5:00 p.m., on Monday at the funeral home.

William Gerald “Bill” Meyer was born on December 14, 1935, the son of Daniel and Laura Mae (Vsetecka) Meyer on the family farm near Fort Atkinson, IA. Bill attended St. John’s Catholic School and Fort Atkinson Public School, graduating in 1953. He entered the US Navy and served from 1954-58 in Hong Kong, Philippines and Hawaii. After the service, he returned and married Janette Ludwig on June 14, 1961, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes, IA. Together they farmed near Fort Atkinson for over fifty years. Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting, coon hunting, mushroom hunting and traveling. Bill was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus in Ossian, the Huber – Steffes American Legion Post # 672 in Fort Atkinson, IA, and the Hereford Association in Kimball, SD.

Bill is survived by his wife: Janette Meyer, Fort Atkinson, IA. Six daughters: Dorothy (Kevin Ondrashek) Meyer, Fort Atkinson, IA; Rosemary (Richard) Phillips, Jackson Junction, IA; Lori (Jess) Schroeder, Fort Atkinson, IA; Virginia (Kevin) Howe, Springville, IA; Susan (Scott) Henry, Dodge Center, MN; and Debbie (Dan Alexander) Meyer, Blue Grass, IA. Two sons: Ralph (Grace) Meyer, Oelwein, IA, and William Meyer, Jr., Fort Atkinson, IA. Six grandchildren: David & Eric Phillips, Nicole, Amy & Aaron Schroeder, and Austin Howe. Two great grandchildren: Nicholas Nelson & Kaitlyn Schroeder. One sister: Carole (William) Waucoma, IA. Five brothers: John Dale (Dolores) Meyer, Calmar, IA; Robert (Charlotte Ann) Meyer, Lawler, IA; James (Janice) Meyer, Fort Atkinson, IA; Daniel (Jeannie) Meyer, Garden Grove, CA; and Peter (Marge) Meyer, Decorah, IA. Aunt: Ellen Riese, Colo, IA.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents: Dan and Laura (Vsetecka) Meyer. His son: John Meyer on Jan. 26, 1996. Two sisters: Virginia (Dee De) Cloninger in 1995 and Charlene (Richard) Schmitt in 2001. One nephew: Danny Joe Schmitt.
