Lewis John Meyer, 67, of Spillville, IA, died at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, WI on September 16,2006 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation will be held at the Balik Funeral Home in Spillville, IA on Monday, September 18, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.. The funeral service will be held in St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eldorado, IA on Tuesday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. by Rev. Dennis Hugdahl Burial will be in the St. Peters Catholic Cemetery in Clermont, IA.

Lewis John Meyer was born February 11, 1939 to Truman and Georgia (Woodson) Meyer. He was baptized March 12, 1939 and confirmed April 6, 1952 at St. Peters in Eldorado, IA Lewis grew up on the family farm near Eldorado .and attended the Dover Country School near Eldorado, IA. On October 25, 1958, he married Elaine Ruroden. They had three children, Lewis Jr., Mark, and Lisa. Lewis worked for Fayette County and farmed near Castalia, IA for several years.

On June 19, 1981, he married Kathleen (McNeil) Ott with whom he shared the rest of his life. He worked for Dessel's Furniture in West Union, IA, Reilly Construction of Ossian, IA, and Featherlite Trailers of Cresco, IA. He also owned/operated the Sportsmans Bar in Spillville, IA for several years and in recent years worked as a carpenter.

He is survived by his wife Kathy of Spillville, IA., a daughter, Lisa Gerleman (Doug Thompson) of Clermont, IA, two sons, Lewis Jr. (fiancee Lori Freeman) of Platte City, MO, and Mark (Brenda) of East Dubuque, IL. Three stepdaughters, Carolyn (Kevin) Hemesath of Ossian, IA, Deborah (Doug) Thorsen of Coon Rapids, MN, and Christine (Lee) Woodson of Ossian, IA. Grandchildren: Kendra, Karissa, and Kandis Gerleman, Stacey & Mitchell Meyer, Jeremy Quario, Codey and Alysha Meyer, Travis and Nicole Rovang, and Blaine and Kyle Woodson. A sister Carol DeVoe of Oelwein, a brother-in-law Joe Chihak of Elma, IA, mother-in-law Corinne McNeil of Postville, IA, two sisters-in-law Mary Jo Macken of North Liberty, IA, Virginia (Ed) Barnes, Cedar Rapids, IA and brother-in-law Tom (Susan) McNeil, Mesa, AZ and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Marvin (Mike), and two sisters Dawn Van Scayoc and Marlene Chihak and father in-law Joe McNeil.

Lewis brought immense joy to our family. He loved his grandchildren more than anything and was happiest when they were around. Put him on his pontoon with a fishing pole, his grandkids, and friends, and he was a happy man. Lewis was a true Vikings fan, even if they weren’t winning that week. Lewis met his disease head on with determination and never lost hope. He was an inspiration to his family and many people whose lives he touched. He taught us the meaning of courage. He was the bravest person we’ve ever known.
