Sadie Lensch Ward, age 88, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Saturday, February 16, 2008, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, Iowa, following a long illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 20, 2008, at the Decorah Lutheran Church in Decorah, Iowa, with Rev. James Glesne, Rev. Bryan Robertson and Rev. Allen Vik officiating.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah and after 10:00 a.m. at the church on Wednesday morning. Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery, Decorah, Iowa.

Sadie Marlys (Borseth) Lensch Ward was born on January 11, 1920, the daughter of Carl and Ida (Erickson) Borseth, on the family farm in Springfield Township. Sadie attended rural country school. She married Harry Lensch, Sr., on July 3, 1945. Together they farmed south of Decorah. Sadie enjoyed raising chickens and selling eggs, along with having coffee and cookies with all of her neighbors when they stopped by. She also cooked at the Phillips 66 Café with Amanda Sensor and worked at Decorah High School in the cafeteria. Sadie married Fay Ward on October 14, 1978, at the First Lutheran Church in Decorah. They lived in Decorah and later in Frankville. Together they cleaned the Oneota Golf Course and the Elks Club. She moved to the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in November of 2004. Sadie was a previous member of the First Lutheran Church, where she was a deaconess and is currently a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church. She also was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Carry-On Neighborhood Club. She loved quilting, shopping and tending to her flower gardens. She was a wonderful cook and baker; making lefsa, delicious pies, cookies and meals for her family and all. She also enjoyed collecting all types of chickens and figurines. Sadie’s greatest love was for her family and her grandchildren, and enjoying time with them.

Sadie’s survivors include her two sons: David (Roselyn) Lensch and John (Muriel) Lensch, both of Decorah, IA. Five step-children: Harry (Mary Lou) Lensch and Ruth “Boots” Lensch, both of Decorah, IA, Kevin (Donna) Ward, San Antonio, TX, Karen (Arlaan) Carter, AZ, and Shane (Jennifer) Ward, Eagle, WI. Five grandchildren: Jim (Verla) Lensch, Cathy (Mark) Nelson, Kevin (friend, Mary) Lensch, Lori (Loren) Luzum and Kent Lensch. Eight great grandchildren: Matthew, Kyle & Michael Lensch; Adam & Brittany Nelson; and Andrew, Aric & Isaac Luzum. Seven step-grandchildren: Steve (Kathy) Lensch, Tom (Deb) Lensch, Janet (Gary) Held, Les (friend, RaeAnn) Lensch, Chris (Nellie) Lensch, Patrick (Barb) Gossen and Ladell (Lynn) Gossen and five step grandchildren of Fay Ward. Many step-great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. One brother: Norman (Lillian) Borseth, Decorah, IA and one sister: Arla (Lester) Hirsch, Charles City, IA. One niece: Ann Borseth and two nephews: Scott Brown and Larry Brown.

Sadie was preceded in death by her parents: Carl and Ida Borseth. Her first husband: Harry on Oct. 24, 1959 and her second husband: Fay Ward on Dec. 19, 2004. One step-son: Robert (Bette) Lensch. Three brothers: Stanley (Margie) Borseth, Clifford (Katie) Borseth and Merle (Elsie) Borseth. One sister-in-law: Dorothy Borseth. One brother-in-law: Melvin Brown.
