Mabel (Sandager) Kruse was born Aug. 30, 1924 to John and Randi (Paulson) Sandager in Minneapolis, Minn. She was baptized and confirmed in her faith at Riverside Presbyterian Church, Minneapolis. After her mother died, when she was only 10, she was raised by her older sister, who she loved dearly. She had always dreamed of living on a farm. She met and married Nick Zeien. They moved to Decorah. To this union, two children were born, Nicholas and Patricia. For a short time she worked in housekeeping at the Hotel Winneshiek. Nick and her later divorced. Still longing to live on a farm, she married Arnold Kruse in 1965. Her dream finally came true. To this union, a daughter was born, Mary Kathryn. Mabel became a member of the Catholic faith at St. Benedicts in Decorah. Mabel loved helping Arnold on the farm and having her nieces and nephews send their children from the Twin Cities to stay with them on the farm in the summer. Arnold and her grew a large garden and enjoyed sharing their harvest with others. She remained on the farm until Arnold’s death when she moved to Ossian. There she enjoyed playing cards and visiting with the ladies. Mabel loved spending time with her grandchildren, putting puzzles together, and latch hooking. She was a member of the De Sales Rosary Society.

She is survived by one son, Nicholas Zeien, Ridgeway; two daughters, Patricia Gjere, Decorah and Mary (Randy) Brincks, Ossian and one step-daughter, Marlys (Stanley) Lensing, Knoxville; grandchildren Nathaniel Zeien, Decorah, Becky (Allen) Rude, Decorah; Kristi (James) Gillett, Minnetonka, Minn.; Melissa, Devin, Logan, Lucas, and Carson Brincks, Ossian; Dale (Lisa) Lensing, Pella; Lisa (Lanny) Hart, Altoona; Michael (Marsha) Kruse, DeWitt; Jeff (Jen) Kruse, Pella, Dawn (Travis) Koenig, Decorah; Paul Richard Kruse, Red Oak; Kindra Ann McGuigan, Decorah; Heather Kruse and 16 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
