Barbara Jane Hummel, 88, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at The Forum at Tucson in Tucson, Ariz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in Decorah Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m., with Father Phillip Gibbs officiating. Memorials may be directed to the family. Burial is at Mount Olivet cemetery, Waterloo.
Barbara Jane (Short) Hummel was born May 18, 1922, in Buchanan County, Iowa, to Carl and Florence (Clabby) Short. Barbara attended rural schools in Buchanan County and graduated from St. John's Catholic High School in Independence. The family moved to Waterloo, in 1947. She worked at the Rath Packing Co. from 1941 - 1984. Barbara married Robert Hummel May 24, 1971, in Reno, Nev. They retired to Tucson, Ariz., in 1985. Barbara was a member of the Catholic Daughters Society, the Rosary Society of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waterloo, and also at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Tucson.
Barbara is survived by her husband Robert, of Tucson; two sisters, Mrs. Sally (Lester) Sevcik, Traer; and Florence Gehling, Decorah; and several nieces and nephews.
Lector is Jennie Hageman. Offertory giftbearers are Sally Sevcik and Florence Gehling. Organist is Mary Beth Bouska. Cantor is Cindy Schissel. Hymns are "Here I am Lord," "Prayer of St. Francis," "On Eagles Wings" and "Be Not Afraid." Interment is at Mount Olivet cemetery, Waterloo.
