Hazel Jeanette (Tangen) Benson, 86, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah. Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. at the Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Cresco. Burial was in the church cemetery. Friends called from 4-6 p.m. Friday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, as well as one hour prior to services at the church.
Hazel was born June 18, 1924 in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, the daughter of Julianna (Hill) and Julius Tangen. She attended rural school near their home in Glenwood and lived in Winneshiek County her entire life.
On Feb. 24, 1953 she married Marvin Benson at the Hesper Lutheran parsonage. They lived on the Benson farm north of Ridgeway, where they raised four children. Hazel was a member of the Orleans Lutheran Church and involved with the Orleans Ladies Aid and the Decorah Circle. She lived on the farm until the end of July, 2010 when she entered the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers Philip, Sherman, and Gilman, and a sister, Frances Rodas.
She is survived by her four children: daughter Muriel (Andy) Janneke of Vadnais Heights, Minn., daughter Marvel of Rochester, Minn., daughter Mayme (Steve) Johnson of Cottage Grove, Minn. And son Mark of Ridgeway, along with three grandchildren: Scott and Ann Janneke, and Samantha Johnson, a step-grandchild Sarah Johnson, and two step-great-grandchildren, Ashlee Johnson and Avery Madison, and several nieces and nephews.
