Florine Arend, 78, of Rock Valley, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011 at Hegg Memorial Hospital. Funeral Service is 11 a.m. today (Thursday, Jan. 20), at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Rock Valley. Burial is at 1 at Ocheyedan Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday with the family present from 6 until 8 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Our Saviors Lutheran or for wellness equipment at Whispering Heights.

Florine Elizabeth Nuss was born April 27, 1932 at Galatia, Kan., daughter of Herbert and Kathryn (Wagner) Nuss. After graduating from Great Bend High School in Kansas, she attended St. John's Lutheran College at Winfield, Kan. for two years where she met Clayton and obtained her teaching certificate. Florine taught at Great Bend, Kan., Fremont, Neb., and was most proud of teaching country school south of Rock Valley. Florine married Clayton Arend on June 25, 1956 at Great Bend, Kan. Together they lived in Rock Valley where Florine was active with family events and travels, golfing and bridge clubs and was a faithful member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. She was a good wife and mother.

Surviving relatives are her husband, Clayton; daughter, Kathy (Brad) Kooima and children Matt, Kayla, Kristin of Rock Valley; great-grandson Ryker Kooima; son Karl (Kristi) Arend and children Brock, Elly, Abby, Anja all of Decorah; brothers, George (Barbara) Nuss of Cape Fair, Mo., Jerry (Candi) Nuss Lamed, Kan.

Florine was preceded in death by her son, Curtis Arend; and brother Larry Nuss.
