Howard Pfister Wendling (May 3, 1911 - October 9,1995)

Howard was bom May 3, 1911 in Highland Township, the second child and only son of John and Emma (Pfister) Wendling. He was baptized here at St. John's by Pastor Knute Seehus on June 4, 1911 and confirmed here by Pastor Christian Heltne in 1925. He attended Locust School He grew up on the farm which has been in the Wendling family since 1857. Besides helping on the home place he traveled to the Dakota's to earn money doing seasonal farm work like so many other young men during the depression years.

On May 27, 1948, Howard and Lucille Anderson were married at the St. John's parsonage by Pastor Carl Losen. That same year Howard and Lucille purchased the farm from Howard's father. Their son Howard Jon was born in 1953 and their daughter Lucile Jeanett was born in 1956.

Howard raised purebred homed Hereford cattle and was a founding board member of the Minnesota-Iowa-Wisconsin Hereford Association in 1959. Expert as his eye was, he judged Beef Showmanship classes at the Winneshiek County Fair. Horses, too, were his passion. He was a lifelong member of the Winneshiek County Saddle Club, and could always be seen at The local horse sales. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau.

In the mid-1970s Howard retired from farming, but even in retirement he continued to love the land and could always be found checking out the crops or helping out a neighbor. He is remembered for his readiness to help and for his great stories about life in the 30s and 40s — stories that he would patiently recount in great detail to family and friends, often sitting around a hot round oak stove with a brisk cup of coffee.

Last Monday morning he went to the kitchen to make breakfast for himself and Lucille as has been his habit since Lucille broke her hip a few years ago. With the coffee simmering, the bacon in the pan, the grapefruit peeled, the bread ready to toast and the eggs ready to fry, Howard sat down and died, leaving the breakfast for Lucille to enjoy, and the farm to the fourth and fifth generations of his family.

Howard is survived his wife Lucille; his son Jon (& Mary) Wendling; his daughter Jeanett (& Tom) Hansen; four grandchildren: John, Jake, & Jennifer Wendling, and Addie Hansen; two sisters: Helen Amundson of Teaneck, New Jersey and Marion Erickson of Rochester, Minnesota.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Edna Grindeland, and a niece, Ruth Bugielski.

Blessed be Hie memory of Howard Pfister Wendling.
