Paul Thingvold was born September 20, 1921 in Hesper Township, the second of five children born to John and Clara (Severson) Thingvold. He was baptized and confirmed at Hesper Lutheran Church

Paul attended county school in Hesper Township through the 8th grade and then attended Mabel High School until he graduated in 1938.

On February 22, 1942, Paul married Corrine Oyen at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Glenwood Township. Two daughters were born to this union: Brenda Kay on November 8, 1944, and Linda Faye on December 4, 1948.

Paul and Corrine made their home and living on a farm off the county road between Locust and Hesper. They joined the Locust church at the cajoling of Pastor Carl Losen, whose family were relatives and neighbors of the Thingvolds, and they have been faithful members of this congregation ever since.

A fan of both the St Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs, Paul enjoyed playing baseball in the days when teams were organized to play Sunday afternoons on diamonds set up in pastures.

He also enjoyed seeing new places. He and Corrine along with their dear friends Clarence and Vera Hovey traveled to almost every state in the Union as well as to Canada and Mexico. It was coming home from one of these trips in 1978 that they heard the terrible news of their daughter Brenda's death in a car accident

Above all, Paul enjoyed his grandchildren, whom he loved to kid and play with. Remaining to the end something of a kid himself.

Besides farming, Paul also worked for the American Soil & Conservation Service for about 30 years and was a member of the Oddfellows for 50 years. Since their retirement in 1990 Paul and Corrine have made their home at 612 River Street in Decorah.

After being hospitalized last weekend, Paul went for the first time, not home, but to Green Lea Manor in Mabel He entered the nursing home on Monday, June 7th, and passed away Wednesday Morning, June 9th, at the age of 77.

Paul is survived by his wife Corrine; daughter Linda Schwade of Stewartville, Minnesota; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, including Jon (& Annette) of Savage. Minnesota, and their son Sean; Jason (& Mindy) Hurley of Richfield, Minnesota, and their children Megan and Braden, Robin (& George) Osterhus of Owatonna, Minnesota, and their children Nick, Preston, and Santana; Rhonda (& Robbie) Johnson of Appleton, Wisconsin, and their daughter Skyler, Paul's only surviving sibling is his sister Kathryn Ford who with her husband Merlin lives in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Other survivors include son-in-law Bernie Hurley and his wife Sandy of Preston, Minnesota, her children, Chris Davis and Jamie Davis, and Jamie's son Tyler Davis. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Brenda Hurley, his brothers Charles, Norman, and Gerhard; and his nephew John Thingvold.

Paul Thingvold 1921-1999

Paul Thingvold, 77, of Decorah, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at the Green Lea Manor in Mabel, Minn.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 12, at 2 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Locust, with the Rev. Arland Braaten-Lee officiating.

Jennifer Little was the organist. The congregation sang "Rock of Ages," "Beautiful Savior" and "What A Friend We Have in Jesus."

Casket bearers were Alcurtis Borsheim, Donavon Borsheim, Gerald Borsheim, Duane Falck, Lloyd Hanson and Alton Losen.

Burial was at the Locust Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral Home handled arrangements. An Odd Fellows service was held during visitation.

Paul was born Sept. 20, 1921, in Hesper Township of Winneshiek

County, on the home farm of his parents, John and Clara (Severson) Thingvold.

Paul was baptized and confirmed at Hesper Lutheran Church. He graduated form Mabel (Minn.) High School in 1938.

He was married to Corrine Oyen Feb. 22, 1942, at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Glenwood Township of Winneshiek County.

Paul farmed in Hesper Township until 1990. He also worked for the A.S.C.S. office for about 30 years.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and of the I.O.O.F. (Odd Fellows) for 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Corrine; one daughter, Linda Schwade of Stewartville, Minn.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren as

follows: Jon and Annette Hurley and Sean of Savage, Minn., Jason and Mindy Hurley, Megan and Braden of Richfield, Minn., Robin and George Osterhus, Nick, Preston and Santana of Owatonna, Minn, and Rhonda and Robbie Johnson and Skyler of Appleton, Wis. Paul Thingvold was preceded in death by his daughter, Brenda Hurley, who died Sept. 4, 1978; his parents; three brothers, Gerhard, Charles and Norman; and by one nephew, John Thingvold.
