Agnes Hellen, age 82, of Decorah died at her home on March 27, 2001 after a sudden illness.
Agnes M. Hellen was born August 15, 1919 on a farm near Ridgeway, Iowa the daughter of William and Rose (Lukas) Macal. Agnes attended country schools near Ridgeway. She married Gerhard Hellen in 1935 at Peace Lutheran Church. They farmed near Ridgeway and moved north of Decorah. In 1967 they moved to town. She also worked at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home for 20 years; Agnes was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Locust. She enjoyed watching and feeding the birds, taking care of her flowers, traveling and going out to eat.
Agnes' survivors include her son Gordon Hellen of Decorah. Three sisters: Irene Haskovec, Protivin, IA; Evelyn Kovarik & husband Victor, Spillville, IA and Helen Schwartz & husband Henry, Seattle, WA. Three brothers: Roy Macal & wife Imogene, Decorah, IA and Leonard Macal & wife Doris, Cresco, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Husband: Gerhard in 1988; One son: Lester in 1954 and one brother: William Macal.

Agnes M. Hellen
Agnes Hellen, 82, of Decorah, died at her home Tuesday, March 27, 2001 after a sudden illness.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 30 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Locust, with Rev. John Mayer officiating.
Music was provided by organist Jennifer Little.
Casket bearers were Bob Spilde, Bill Kovarik, Ervin Hellen, Ardell Syverson, Derwin Ludeking arid Richard Anderson.
Interment was in Locust Cemetery with French and Balik Funeral Home of Decorah handling arrangements.
