Virgil Leonard Winfield Bender was born on September 15, 1910 the son of Adam and Dora (Brandt) Bender on the family farm in Hesper Township, west of Locust.

Virgil attended Canoe School #6. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church.

On June 2, 1937 he married Lucella Peterson at Hauge Lutheran Church. And to this union two daughters were born; Elaine and Carol. In the later 1950's. Their foster son, Rodney Ask came to live with them.

Virgil farmed in Hesper Township all his life and enjoyed his cows, the outdoors and doing carpentry. After retirement he enjoyed trout fishing, yardwork and gardening, Virgil enjoyed teaching his grandchildren the ways of the farm. He was loving and kind to his wife, children and their spouses, grandchildren and family. He was an honest and quiet man of true faith in God and loved very much by his family and friends. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was an active member.

Virgil is survived by his wife Lucella; two daughters Elaine Yarwood and husband Dean of Columbia, Missouri and Carol Blegen and husband Don of Decorah, Iowa; one foster son Rodney Ask and wife Jan of Monticello, Minnesota; one sister Myrtle Barth, Decorah, Iowa and one brother Walter Bender and wife Doris of Decorah, Iowa. Nine grandchildren Cindy Snider, Kent, Keith, Douglas and Dennis Yarwood, Shelly Provost, Jeffrey Blegen, Daniel and Annette Ask. Fifteen great grandchildren Rebecca, Abigail, Paul, Allan, Carl Dean, Brittany, Clayton, Wyatt, Paige, Amber, Kaia, Janae, Luke, Stacia and Daylac.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Bessie Barth; one brother: Adam Bender, Jr.

Virgil Bender

Virgil Bender, 90, of Decorah, died Saturday, February 3, 2001 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Locust, rural Decorah, with Rev. John Mayer and Rev. O. Paul Hougen officiating.

Kathy Murray was organist, and Cheryl Adam, soloist, sang "In the Garden" and "The Lord's Prayer.

The congregation sang "Softly and Tenderly" and "How Great Thou Art."

Casket bearers were Virgil Bender's grandchildren.

Interment was in Locust Cemetery, with arrangements by French and Balik Funeral Home of Decorah.

Surviving Virgil Bender are his wife, Lucella Bender, of Decorah; two daughters, Elaine and Dean Yarwood of Columbia, Mo.; Carol and Don Blegen of Decorah; one foster son, Rodney and Jan Ask of Monticello, Minn.; nine grandchildren: Cindy Snider, Kent, Keith, Douglas and Dennis Yarwood, Shelly Provost, Jeffrey Blegen, Daniel and Annette Ask; fifteen great-grandchildren: Rebecca, Abigail, Paul, Allan, Carl Dean, Brittany, Clayton, Wyatt, Paige, Amber, Kaia, Janae, Luke, Stacia and Daylac; one sister, Myrtle Barth of Decorah; and one brother, Walter Bender & Doris of Decorah.

Virgil Leonard Winfield Bender was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Bessie Barth and one brother, Adam Bender, Jr.

Virgil Bender services held today
Funeral services for Virgil L. Bender of Decorah will be held today, Wednesday, February 7, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Locust, rural Decorah. Rev. John Mayer will officiate. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Locust. French and Balik Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Virgil, 90, died Saturday, February 3, 2001 at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah following a lengthy illness.
Survivors include his wife Lucella of Decorah; two daughters: Carol Blegen of Decorah and Elaine Yarwood of Colombia, MO; one foster son: Ronald Ask of Monticello, MN; one sister: Myrtle Barth of Decorah; and one brother: Walter Bender also of Decorah.
