Guido "Pete" Franzen

Guido "Pete" Franzen, 91, Ossian, Iowa, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2011, at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa. Pete was born on Dec. 23, 1919, in St. Lucas, Iowa, to Joseph Sr. and Kathrina (Boyer) Franzen. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke Catholic Church in St. Lucas, Iowa, and attended school in St. Lucas.

Pete moved from St. Lucas to Ossian in 1945 where he farmed for many years. On November 11, 1947, Pete was united in marriage to Eleanora Imoehl at Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina, Iowa. Thirteen children were born to this union. Then in 1998, they moved into Ossian. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Union Produce Board, Springfield Trustee, Ossian Senior Hospice Board, Tri-Township Fire & Ambulance Board and Silver Springs Golf & Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanora Franzen, Ossian; thirteen children, Sharon Kay (Phillip) Stoddard, Rowley, Dr. Keevin (Mary) Franzen, Dubuque, Clyde (Debra) Franzen, Ossian, Dean (Joann) Franzen, Elkader, Ivan (Karen) Franzen, Ossian, Inez (Larry) Brincks, Decorah, Brian (Judy) Franzen, Decorah, Phyllis (Curt) Krambeer, Cedar Rapids, Joyce (Randy) Tietz, Cedar Rapids, Arlin (Jill) Franzen, Ossian, Lester (Cindy) Franzen, Waverly, Rodney (Lynn) Franzen, Ossian, Terry Franzen, Ossian; 28 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; six siblings, Carl Franzen, Theresa Baumler, Irvin Franzen, Lawrence Franzen, Helen (Ronald) Palmersheim, LeRoy (JoAnn) Franzen and one sister-in-law, Marion Franzen.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Sr. and Kathrina Franzen; six siblings, Catherine (Roy) Tierney, Marie (Lawrence) Bruening, Leonard (Mary) Franzen, Raymond Franzen, Theckla Franzen in infancy and Louis (Arlene) Franzen; two sisters-in-law, Madeline Franzen, Pat Franzen and one brother-in-law, Ray Baumler.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011, from 3:30-8:00 p.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa, with Rosary at 3:30 p.m. lead by the Knights of Columbus and Scripture Service at 4 p.m.

There will be a one hour visitation before the Mass of Christian Burial that will be held on Sat., September 10, 2011, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Ossian, Iowa. The Rev. Monsignor Cletus Hawes will be the celebrant.

Burial will follow in the St. Francis de Sales Cemetery in Ossian, Iowa.

Schmitz Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Ossian, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
