Mildred Evelyn Breitsprecher, 95, Ossian, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa. Mildred was born on January 30, 1916, rural Castalia, Iowa, to Johannes and Anna (Mikkelson) Svendsen. She attended country school at Bloomfield #8 until eighth grade. She then attended high school in Ossian. After graduation, she attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her degree in teaching. She celebrated her 50th class reunion at the University of Northern Iowa in the 1980's.

On December 30, 1936, she was united in marriage to Lyle Breitsprecher in Rochester, MN. They were the proud parents of six children, Wanda Kay, JoAnn, Lee, David, Gary and Mary Ellen. Mildred was very active in the community. She served on the Ossian Senior Housing Board, Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital Board and was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia. Also, Mildred was a member of the neighborhood,Tuesday Club, for over fifty-five years. For several years, she worked at Dr. Bud Vagts Veterinary Clinic in Ossian.

Mildred enjoyed baking chocolate cake and homemade bread. She always had a large garden and made several afghans for the family. Mildred and Lyle enjoyed dancing, playing cards and spending time with family and friends. They owned the Ossian Sales Commission from 1966-1968.

Survivors include one son, David (Pamela) Breitsprecher, Ossian; two daughters, JoAnn Ott, Ossian and Mary Ellen (Herbert) Hageman, Ossian; one daughter-in-law, Marilyn Breitsprecher, Ossian; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; one brother, John Svendsen, Castalia; and three sisters-in-law, Vernice Svendsen, Lawler, Mary Svendsen, Castalia and Ramona Svendsen, Decorah.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lyle Breitsprecher; three children, Wanda Kay and her husband, Robert Wettleson, Gary and Lee; one son-in-law, Darrell Ott; one granddaughter, Joy Breitsprecher; three brothers, Reuben, Arthur and Norman and five sisters, Esther Svendsen, Lillie Zweibohmer, Evelyn Svendsen, Arlette Bacheldor and Ellen Thompson.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, June 6, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia. The Rev. Dave Lenth will officiate. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Ossian, Iowa.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2011, from 4-8 p.m. at the Schmitz Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Ossian, Iowa, and one hour before services at the church on Monday.
